Great drives to pair with Synology NAS

This is the forth Seagate Ironwolf 8TB drive I bought for my NAS. It was purchased to increase available storage and it works as advertised. The purchase experience from B&H was wonderful. In some ways better than the experience I had at the other large online store. Thank you B&H, I will be back.

They make some noise when working in a RAID 1 configuration, but I understand that to be normal.

Works fine in QNAP TS-128A (also worked in my old QNAP HS-210, don’t tell anyone)

I read some reviews here that say this drive is loud when it seeks, but that is not been my experience. For a NAS drive it’s very quiet. As far as quality goes, I won’t know for a year or so, but we used these at work and never had any trouble. This is used as a backup drive so it’s always spinning and online.

I bought 4 of these for moderate use in a great Synology system. 18 months later, all 4 have issues. One of them has increasing bad sector failures. The other three have conflicting SMART information. Switching back to HGST now. Also not a fan of the Ironwolf support. Obviously people are buying these drives for RAID – and yet their rules for shipping and cross shipping do not take into account RAID rebuild times. Also cross-shipping needs to be easier and a more viable solution. Again, going back to HGST. What an unneeded headache this has turned out to be – and truly no less expensive than HGST.

Worked perfectly and was super easy to break down into 3 separate volumes using Windows 10 Computer Management program. My choices were 2tb for General Purpose-2, and 5tb each for Back-up-1 & Back-up-2

Seagate is my go-to brand for hard drives. I got these on sale recently and put them in my Synology 4 bay NAS. Running smoothly with good transfer speeds. I expect them to be reliable like all my other Seagate drives.

I was surprised how quickly the prior 4TB WD Reds filled up. (it all those backups and a lifetime of photos). These didn’t appear on the approved drive list for my box, but the 10TBs were. Much to my delight, the 12’s went in with no problem. I replaced one at a time. Since I’m using RAID 1, my NAS immediately recognized the new drive and spent the next day and a half synchronizing. When it was done, I put the other new IronWolf in. Same scenario. When the sync was complete everything was as it should be, except bigger and faster! Great deal on these B&H helped too.

These drives started to fail with 6 months since I bought them for my NAS. I am running with 32GB ECC RAM and Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1220 V2 @ 3.10GHz on on Supermicro X9SCM-F, LGA 1155 motherbaord with SuperMicro AOC-S3008L-L8E 12Gb/s SAS 8 Port Internal PCIe HBA Controller I am running TrueNAS-12 and it’s a home NAS with very little usage and I did not expect these drives to fail so fast. Bottom line is that I do not recommend them at all.

I got 2 of these for my new Synology NAS. No issues so far.

Needed to replace a 4TB hard drive and find a great deal on this 8TB.

Drives still working with no issues since they were installed and setup in my NAS.

I have a thunderbolt RAID box attached to my Mac. This is the ONLY 10TB drive I tested that works for me — other I tested weren’t detected. I’m slowly upgrading, one by one, so this is actually my 4th drive – 4 to go 🙂 So far everything is fine.

No issues with package, I did insert that in my Synology and that works well, so I hope to use that 5-7 years without any issues.
