I got this to upgrade my Qnap NAS from 3TB to 12TB. Previously went with another vender that has some issues with not advertising they where using SMR technology in the drives. Read a good few reviews before opting for the Seagate Ironwolf as I want a reliable drive with large storage that will last me a long time. This fits the bill. Also has Ironwolf Health Management that shows up in the Qnap NAS storage along with SMART to detect health of drive and to monitor for any issues, which is a nice bonus.

These drives started to fail with 6 months since I bought them for my NAS. I am running with 32GB ECC RAM and Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1220 V2 @ 3.10GHz on on Supermicro X9SCM-F, LGA 1155 motherbaord with SuperMicro AOC-S3008L-L8E 12Gb/s SAS 8 Port Internal PCIe HBA Controller I am running TrueNAS-12 and it’s a home NAS with very little usage and I did not expect these drives to fail so fast. Bottom line is that I do not recommend them at all.

I have purchased a number of Seagate Iron Wolf drives over the past 5 years. I disappointed that the failure rates are higher than comparable Western Digital NAS drive. I use these in several Synology Disk Station NASs.

in a RAID 1 array inside a QNAP 431P. Quiet and cool. Hitting BW limits on GbE, 110+ MB/s.

Good NAS drive. Arrived super fast and well packaged. Top level service as usual.

I’ve baught many ironwolf drives for my multiple Synology NAS setups in two offices. Both Pro and this Basic model. Always reliable. Only had to place 1 of 18 in an 8 year span as sectors were begining to fail.

I’ve only had these drives for a few weeks, but they have been working great. I put two of these in my Synology DS220+. The only drawback is their noise level. ‘nascompares’ did a comparison between different hard drive noise levels, and these specific drives from iron wolf (8 TB) ranked as the top five loudest, coming in at around 37.7 dB(A). If you want less noisy drives, the Iron Wolf 10TB and 12TB are much better. The 10TB comes in around 27.5 dB(A), while the 12TB comes in around 24.3 dB(A).

The chip shortage impacted delivery times, but B&H didn’t give up. They kept me updated, and delivered after a reasonable delay. These HDDs are fantastic for applications that fit their characteristics. I get many years of reliable use.

in a small NAS, two of these are have been reliable and quiet
Tomas Swaniawski (verified owner) –
It’s a 6 TB NAS drive. Very quiet. Not much to say other than that. When in operation it makes very little noise. I’ve only used it for about two weeks now, so unable to speak to how long it will last. I don’t expect any issues

Iron wolf health management with synologh Extra level of insurance

Ordered these because they are some of the most cost effective drives of this capacity in the market. Being industrial type drives hopefully they last, even if they are seagate drives.
Lauriane Bailey (verified owner) –
It’s fast; I got 250MB/sec copy when copying three drives to this one at once. It’s not very loud, and for the price it’s a lot of space.
