This died after only backing up once. A couple of weeks after backing it up, I plugged it back into my PC to do another backup, and it just beeped and I could hear the arm motor try to move. Very disappointed.

No set up needed. Just plug it in! Works well

I have Windows XP and I purchased a PCI card with USB 3.0 ports on it to interface with the Seagate drives. Unfortunately, In the small print on a PDF I got from the Seagate web site, not in the published sales information, was the requirement that it required Windows 7 or later OS. My USB ports connected to the drives but the OS did not recognize them. I then purchased a used desktop computer with Windows 7 installed and 4 USB 3.0 ports. I then started to transfer files from my older 3 TB hard drives to one of the new 8 TB drives. I wasn’t disappointed with relatively slow transfer rates thinking that it was the USB 2 rating of the old 3 TB drives. However, I then started transferring files from one of the new 8TB drives to the other 8TB drive and the best data rate I got, with them both plugged into USB 3 ports was about 26 Mega-Bytes per second. It took over a day to transfer the 2.9 TB of data between the two new 8 TB drives. I’m not sure what the problem was but it was painfully slow. Back to the review: B&H did nothing wrong and the drives were delivered quickly in good shape and I want to be sure that the reader does not equate my issues to dissatisfaction with B&H. However, I am les than satisfied with the performance of the Seagate 8TB hard drives. I’ve been a fan of Seagate and these were the 6th and 7th USB external Seagate drives I’ve purchased for data storage on my computer(s).

BIG expansion desktop drive. This is my BU to my 8Tb NAS. USB 3.0 reads and writes FAST!

I got this for periodic backups and archives. Works great. I do wish it had a USB A and or C connection type. Those may be slower, but most folk already have those cables on hand. I worry about the lack of cooling and dust removal options, but no issues so far.

Yeah you might not be able to edit 8k video off these drives but in terms of storage this is more than enough for logging raw video files. I got these because it was on sale and surprisingly cheaper than Costco. So I got three.

For context, I am using a Linux mini desktop as my primary home platform. I reformatted the drive with the EXT4 file system. It is one of 4 expansion drives in my configuration. 2 of the other expansion drives are backups (using rsync), while this and one other drive are my primaries. I am moving a net of around 20GB of data per day onto these drives (adding around 35GB and removing around 15GB per day). All of the drives are between 60% and 75% utilized. All 4 expansion drives are connected via USB3 interfaces. Now for my review. I have found this drive to be very reliable and reasonably fast. While writes are noticeably slower than reads, they are still much faster than USB2 drives. In spite of the hard disk not having lightning fast rotational speed (I think it is a 5400 rpm model), it gets the job done without significant delays. When I move a large quantity of data in a short period, the drive does get warm (certainly not hot). It seems to cool off relatively quickly during periods when I am not moving data. During times when I am not using it, the drive autoparks (reducing power consumption and wear/tear on the drive, itself). Bottom line, I would recommend this as a good option for anyone seeking to expand their storage footprint.

Worked right out of the box. Currently using as backup for multiple machines. Plugs into a powered USB hub with no problems. Will see how long it lasts, but so far so good.

Runs fast enough to serve as a manual backup drive, and 18TB should be good enough for several years. It is not silent but the fan is reasonably quiet. I reformatted it for MacOS, by the way. IN GENERAL I’ve noticed that virtually all reviews for external hard drives have a few people complaining of slow R/W, and I think that is because drives are usually delivered in EXFAT format to accommodate both Mac and PC. EXFAT always runs slow in my experience.

We are using it as a Time Machine Drive for a Retina iMac for video work. No Problems!

First Seagate was an internal add-on to my Mac G5. It lived as long as the computer (years) with no issues. Second was a 3TB external, now several years old, used with my previous iMac–the 3TB still works fine. This drive was bought for use with the new 2019 iMac–I wanted more space for large photo and video files. Reformatting for Mac is effortless and takes only a few minutes with Disk Utility. One thing I like about the Seagates is that they make little noise when working. Some drives sound like they are shredding your data–not these.

I used these drives for backing up my own NZ railroad video and sound files, work files and final writes. Great value buying these larger units from B & H along with my DVD and BR disc needs. Super quick delivery for the over 14,000km distance also.

I took the unit out of the box, plugged it into my USB hub, and my PC computer immediately recognized it. I was also able to transfer about 3TB of images and other data very easily. The reason I have not given this device 5 stars is that I have not had it long enough to be able to address its longevity.

Item is listed as functional on both pc and MacBook, however it does not work on Mac. I have exchanged this item twice now and have decided to return the item to purchase a different hard drive because this simply does not work on my MacBook Pro 12.1. Terrible use of my time.

I experienced data corruption when using cables other than the very short cable the drive ships with. Maybe I have bad cables but they seem to work fine with other drives.

Customer for life! Thank you, B&H you have such an awesome team. This product arrived extremely quickly, in a well protected packaging. Overall Seagate is a great product, data read and write speed is fast, quality material such as the hard drive housing is dourable, needs a little more air circulation. I currently own 10x of this 8TB expansion drive. I will be ordering more of this soon. Because B&H provides the best products, low pricing and expedited shipping.

Have used all the major brands, Seagate has the best reputation for simply working. Only Seagate brand drives have never failed (fingers crossed!), this in a controlled environment, UPS etc etc. Two thumbs up!
