Store, access, and edit up to 10TB of data, whether at home or on-the-go, including documents, music, movies, photos, and more with the 10TB Backup Plus USB 3.0 External Hard Drive with USB Hub from Seagate. This drive connects to your system using its integrated micro-USB 3.0 (micro-B 10-pin) port and provides data transfer speeds of up to 160 MB/s, while also being backwards compatible with USB 2.0. In addition to its storage capabilities, this drive has also been equipped with dual front-mounted USB 3.0 Type-A ports, which can be used to recharge your tablet, smartphone, or camera, as well as back up files, even if your system is turned off or in standby mode.
Seagate’s Backup Plus Hub is compatible with both Windows and Mac systems. It is pre-formatted for Windows and Mac compatibility requires the downloadable NTFS driver for Mac. Once installed, this drive can be used interchangeably between Windows and Mac without needing to be reformatted. Also included is downloadable Seagate backup software, a 4′ micro-USB 3.0 to USB Type-A cable, a power adapter, and a complimentary four month membership to Adobe’s Creative Cloud Photography Plan.

Issue #1: I have been able to format Seagate 0.5 TB, WD 2 TB, and WD 3TB drives to exFAT so they work directly with my Windows and Mac computers. Not so with this Seagate 8 TB. Formatting to exFAT causes this drive to be unrecognizable by Mac. I had to format back to NTSF and install the Paragon driver. Issue #2: Mac – Seagate 8 TB – Seagate 2 TB works just fine. The Seagate 8 TB is acting as a USB hub, and both drives are usable. Mac – Seagate 8 TB – WD 3 TB does not work. The WD 3 TB drive is not recognizable. Mac – Seagate 8 TB – another USB hub – WD 3 TB works fine. Why do I need another USB hub in between? I’m very disappointed with this product and don’t recommend it.

Used this on my new computer for backups. Easy to connect and use. Backups are inherently slow so write speed is of little consequence for my application. I copied the backup to a second hard drive connected via one of the USB 3.1 ports on this drive. Easy as dragging the file from one folder to the other. 180 GB backup file copied to second drive in about 90 minutes. I was surprised it copied that quickly because of my experience with an older computer and older hard drive but my new computer has USB 3.0 as does this drive and the drive to which I was copying the file so I am very pleased with its performance. I think Seagate puts a variety of different drives inside the enclosure for this product. The drive inside of mine is a 5400 RPM ST8000DM004 Barracuda according to my CrystalDisk utility. Some customers report having received 5900 RPM drives but this one has 256 MB cache and TGMR recording technology (which may be similar to Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) according to some sources though to me it seems to be a form of Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) which is evidently superior to SMR in terms of speed of overwriting existing files).

This is my third Seagate USB 3.0 external HD with USB Hub because I have never had a problem with the first two. I started with a 2TB, then bought a 4TB, and now an 8TB as my need for storage space steady increases over the years that I’ve been running by photography business. These external HD are reliable which is important to me and my clients whose work gets stored on them. Of course, who can’t use a couple more USB ports too!
