Very useful & reliable & after much searching cheapest 8TB I found. Very useful with extra USB sockets-saves having to transfer things through computer & so is much faster, also less ware & tear on computer-all controlled & viewed through USB cable plugged into computer.

I haven’t had reason to use the plus hub yet. I hate Seagate’s proprietary-to-USB cable; proprietary-connector is easily knocked loose. USB type A, B, and C… not easily knocked loose. I might order another, anyway.

Horrible product. Will not buy Seagate again.

While it’s not the fastest drive on the market, it seems to be pretty reliable as a backup/storage drive. I find that when trying to edit 4K video on a drive like this, it can slow down the process when comes to rendering effects, etc. But overall it seems to be performing quite well for me as a storage drive. I think one key factor to extending the life of this hard drive is to not keep it connected to your computer continuously when not in use. Also, not keeping it plug to a power source when not in use helps.

Easy to set up and the charging ports are a nice bonus.

Bought this to backup a NAS that has 6TB of data on it. Transfers (rsync) started out at 30MB/sec (not great) over USB, but by the time I got a couple of TB on this drive, transfer speeds had dropped to less than 1MB/sec. I seriously doubt it will even be possible to copy all 6TB from the server to this drive. Additionally, when totally idle, this drive continuously thrashes the head around for no apparent reason. Serves me right for buying Seagate. If you buy this drive, you have only yourself to blame.

Does the job

This is my 5th Seagate external drive. I’ve used them for backups for many years and have never had a problem with one. The new models have USB hubs on the front which is an added bonus.

I have an Apple computer and had problems with Western Digital external drives. The Seagate works perfectly. Great drive. Mark

From what I can tell this is abnormal and not typical. Not every single one of these Seagate backup plus Hub Drives will be faulty, but it seems to have a higher number of failure than other backup drives. Now I’m stuck having to deal with Seagate hardware warranty which is 2 years and having to find a solution for storing my data while not having the drive. As always B&H is super helpful, I purchased it for work while budget was approved but didn’t use it until 3 months later when I needed it. This is when I discovered the issue. You would expect transfer speeds of 150 MB/s or faster with anything over 50 MB/s being decent enough to transfer files at a reasonable speed. Currently it’s taking me over 2 hours for 31.3 GB which is just unacceptable – you would expect faster speeds from USB 2.0 btw.

I got this to replace my Western Digital (which failed-no surprise). I did have to reformat for Mac in order for it to be used as a Time Machine backup. I thought I read that it work right out of the box – not. Seems to be holding up fine but Ive only had it connected for 1 week. I have a MacPro running 10.12.6

I’ve been using it a few weeks now, mainly to back up photo files, which are pretty big. I’m using this drive to back up another Seagate hard drive, which I’ve been using for two years or so without any problems, which is why I decided to buy another Seagate drive. Another popular brand of hard drive that I used to employ for back ups failed after a year or two of use, so I switched to Seagate. It seems that all hard drives fail sooner or later; it’s just that Seagate seems to last longer. I’ve not had one crash yet. Nevertheless, I always feel more secure if I have two backups of my photos and other data. Thus, I don’t hesitate to recommend Seagate drives.

It’s a big drive for a reasonable price; the speed is largely irrelevant to me — I use it as my central repository for raw image files. This format of drive also has the useful USB 3 pass-through ports on the front and though I don’t use them at present, they might be very useful in future.

Had to return it for replacement, once I got the RMA the exchange was timely and the replacement works very well. I would do business with B&H again. I like their return policy.

I do volumes of Adobe creative suite files. I often need to reference templates and files that are years old, and from different locations. I thought apple cloud was the holy grail. I was wrong. I won’t even start with the cloud issues. I will say having 4TB sitting on my desktop is stress free. The Mirror function of this drive is very nice. The two usb outs are awesome. I also have the small 4TB Seagate doing Timemachine. These drives are small enough to travel, large enough to hold years of work. So far, no broken links in my video or design files. That was my main cloud issue. I will not be going back to cloud. cons: This drive is not lightening fast. When you search for something, it doesn’t give you that snappy flash drive search that you’ve come to love. Just be patient, it will get it.

It was great to find a great big storage device for a great price! I have already filled it

I heeded the advice about limiting the capacity to 6TB in order to avoid the ‘noise’ issue and I have no remorse-it’s very quiet and I’m satisfied with its performance. The integrated 2-port USB hub on this model is a convenient bonus especially for connecting my memory card reader and iPhone.

Been a huge fan of Seagate for many years. I was buying Lacie until Seagate bought them out. As a film editor and music creator I have a whole house full of hard drives, been that way for a long time and I’ve always relied on Seagate to keep me backed up and ready to go. I purchased my first 8TB from Costco in an attempt to move a lot of files to this one place like a server, who would think I’d fill it up so soon, but here I am almost out of space, so since I’ve had such great luck with this drive, I did not hesitate to purchase another one. I really like the extra usb ports on the front! When you have as many drives as I do, having that USB port there is a time saver when I’m needing to get some files moved over quickly. Great drives! I don’t see myself purchasing another brand! I’d take a picture, but I have too many to even try and get into one picture!
