Store, access, and edit up to 14TB of data, whether at home or on-the-go, including documents, music, movies, photos, and more with the 14TB Backup Plus USB 3.0 External Hard Drive with USB Hub from Seagate. This drive connects to your system using its integrated micro-USB 3.0 (micro-B 10-pin) port and provides data transfer speeds of up to 160 MB/s, while also being backwards compatible with USB 2.0. In addition to its storage capabilities, this drive has also been equipped with dual front-mounted USB 3.0 Type-A ports, which can be used to recharge your tablet, smartphone, or camera, as well as back up files, even if your system is turned off or in standby mode.
Seagate’s Backup Plus Hub is compatible with both Windows and Mac systems. It is pre-formatted for Windows and Mac compatibility requires the downloadable NTFS driver for Mac. Once installed, this drive can be used interchangeably between Windows and Mac without needing to be reformatted. Also included is downloadable Seagate backup software, a 4′ micro-USB 3.0 to USB Type-A cable, a power adapter, and a complimentary four month membership to Adobe’s Creative Cloud Photography Plan.

Bought this to backup a NAS that has 6TB of data on it. Transfers (rsync) started out at 30MB/sec (not great) over USB, but by the time I got a couple of TB on this drive, transfer speeds had dropped to less than 1MB/sec. I seriously doubt it will even be possible to copy all 6TB from the server to this drive. Additionally, when totally idle, this drive continuously thrashes the head around for no apparent reason. Serves me right for buying Seagate. If you buy this drive, you have only yourself to blame.

We’ve been using large-capacity Seagate drives to backup our main editing drives and RAIDs for a long time. We only use these as a backup solution, and they represent the best value per gigabyte anywhere. I’ve yet to use the new USB ports but it’s nice to know they’re there.

Despite several online search results hinting this drive is PS5 compatible, it is in fact not. This drive lacks support for USB SuperSpeed, which is a requirement for PS5 external USB drive compatibility. Also the hub feature of this drive is an additional factor that may impact compatibility and performance. One might expect the port on the back of the unit to be a direct interface that bypasses the hub, but that does not appear to be the case. In my tests I saw average write speeds of approximately 27MB/s for write 200MB/s for read.

I have used this hard drive for a few weeks on a Win 7 computer, and am generally satisfied with it. The drive is extremely easy to set up (simply plug in!) and very quiet. It is fairly slow, and therefore best for those who want to have a lot of storage space at a low price, but dont mind waiting a bit longer for large storage jobs to finish.

The jury is still out. Immediately after installing the drive, an annoying popup with the Seagate logo appeared asking me to format the drive. It stated that one could click on a block to not ask this question again and then click on cancel. After much communication with Seagate Support and reformatting the drive (at their recommendation), an process that took 48 hours, the pesky popup is still with me. I give the drive two stars, because I think Seagate Support is woefully inadequate. I’m sorry I purchased this drive.

I heeded the advice about limiting the capacity to 6TB in order to avoid the ‘noise’ issue and I have no remorse-it’s very quiet and I’m satisfied with its performance. The integrated 2-port USB hub on this model is a convenient bonus especially for connecting my memory card reader and iPhone.
