Quiet, fast, cold – that’s how I can describe this hard drive! I have more than 10 devices, and after two years everything is in excellent condition.

I just got this, but so far it has been easy to set up and use. One downside is that it’s noticeably weightier than a smaller capacity model I had, which makes it somewhat unwieldy on a USB connection hanging off of a laptop. Also, it gets warmer than I would prefer after a series of 4-5 minute transfers; that will bear some watching.

I bought this to use as an extra back up drive and it works well. Very simple plug in and use it.

PROS: You can’t beat the price for getting 8 Terabytes + an external enclosure with a USB3 hub. It doesn’t look half bad, either. HDD enclosed is not terribly fast, but what do you expect for a budget backup HDD? CONS: The software packaged with the drive is awful. Slow. Buggy. Unreliable. Do yourself a favor and invest in 3rd party back-up software. Unless you’re using the Windows/MacOS cross-platform drivers, go ahead and format this drive to your native filesystem and leave Seagate’s stuff out of your backup process. Your data and sanity will be better for it. In the end, you’re paying for a dirt cheap external backup drive. Don’t count the software as part of the value, though.

It’s my 5th Seagate drive and i’m a happy customer, it’s not the fastest of drives but good enough speed for my needs, 5T, nice design, all-in-all good product.

I am very pleased with the quality & value that Seagate hard drives provides me for backing up my system & storing my photos. I am using this drive as my second image back up. Thank you B&H Photo for providing us with great deals.

the outlet does not stay connected. I have 2 of them and both with the same problem. Each time it disconnects I chance corrupting my files. Maybe it’s just the tones from B&H cause of have 2 others and they are fine.

I have two in different colors for easy identification. Excellent backup drive, but the case is kind of slippery and I worried about it sliding off a desk or table. I put an Xcellon anti-slip pad on the bottom; no problems!

As always, excellent product, fair and competitive prices, and excellent service! I’m a 20 year regular patron of B&H and hopefully for 20 more!

This drive is silent and has a small footprint. Fully USB powered so a power cord is not required. Runs a bit warm. It’s a winner!

Using the drive for on-site backup of another external drive. The extra USB ports are handy for charging my phone, or whatever else I need to plug in.

We had a similar/maybe same unit in the past for backing up our server at the office. The new one is similarly fast/efficient and backing up our main server and Seagate external backup drives have been very reliable for us over the years… would recommend.

Works well, connection is fast, small and light, does not need a power adapter. Only down side is that my Samsung s20 phone has trouble recognizing it.

Fast enough. No problems.

Getting this 4 TB portable USB disk storage have provided an ease of mind against computer system hard disk crashes. I am using this portable disk as a repository that maintains all my computers recovery images. The capacity is large enough to maintain many image versions.

Great little drive! I have 3. I use them for what I call cold storage. I use them for photo archives. I do not need speed – I do not store video. They are never on all the time – just for image archive. I have other larger 4T full size drives for day to day back up. I use 1t drive dedicated by year. Basically they only get used 5-15 times a year. Always make sure everything is backed up in two places other than your computer. I maintain 3 backup locations. All drives will fail at some point in time. None of my drives have ever failed (I feel blessed) and most are Seagate.

Ran an in depth smart test as soon as I got it (as I always do for new hard drives) and it passed with no warnings/errors. It’s a nice physical size for an enclosure and the red color is nice and shiny (but still looks like a serious product). Two downsides: 1) it’s not using a usb c connector to the drive itself, instead it uses some connection I don’t know the name of and don’t have a cable for already (it ships with a cable, but if I ever needed a replacement, usb c is far more common than whatever this connection is). 2) it’s an smr platter (shingled magnetic recording) which will make it slower than the conventional option. That’s kind of the tradeoff to get a 5TB drive in 2.5 form factor (although I think they also use it for the smaller capacity drives in this line as well). For my workload – doing a full backup once a year or so and incremental backups in between, I don’t really mind, but something to be aware of. My initial full backup took 12-16 hours for 2.5TB worth of data, ymmv.
