Designed for growing your digital library, the light blue 5TB Backup Plus USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from Seagate is formatted as exFAT and compatible with Windows and Mac right out of the box. It connects to systems running Windows 7 and higher or macOS 10.11 and higher using its micro-USB port and an included 18" micro-USB to USB Type-A cable that supports USB 3.0, which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1, as well as USB 2.0. It is bus powered so no additional power supplies are required and also features plug-and-play functionality, meaning that no additional drives are required for use.
Also included with Backup Plus is downloadable Toolkit Backup Software, which lets you backup on demand, schedule automatic backups as you desire, and mirror folders for file management. Take advantage of a 1-year subscription to Mylio Create to organize your photos and protect, edit, share, and sync them across multiple devices and use a 2-month subscription to Adobe’s Creative Cloud Photography Plan to edit and create using Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC.

Used as time machine backup for 6 months and then would no longer mount to my Mac. Appreciate that Seagate is sending replacement drive for $11.95 shipping and return of failed drive, but I don’t trust it with my data anymore (will use as a secondary backup).

I have a lot of video files and this External Hard Drive works to perfection every time. I may have to purchase another one real soon, B&H. So get ready.

I needed a backup drive for my 2TB of MacBook Pro SSDs – this does the trick!

Good performance for archive – not for A/V, just for backup.

Easy to reformat for Mac. Easy to load. No problems yet.

Was looking forward to this drive as I’ve trusted Seagate for years. But must have gotten a lemon.

I have a million of these for professional and personal use. Easy to set up and always reliable.

Small, yet mighty … gives me piece of mind that it constantly backs-up my computer and my files are secure.

I work photography and video that consume a lot of hard disk space, as soon as I finish each job I backup them on these hard drives for future orders from my clients. I have six 5TB discs and they have never failed me, highly recommended

My first Seagate in over 20 years. The drive performs about as I expected. The backup software is terrible. Bare bones and useless interface, I will probably continue using my WDC backup.

Large 4TB capacity and easy to use make this a 5 star.

Reviews said devise was loud, was expecting John Force Funny Car type noise. Not so, some low level clicking once in a while. It had trouble backing up with the software as delivered. I erased the disk and then no problem.

I reformatted it to use the Mac encrypted formatting, and started using it with Time Machine as well as backing up from other drives, using up to 4 Tera with no problem. I see that Time Machine backups faster with this unit than any of the other desktop drives of 4Tera. I saw mentions of the noise, yes it is lauder if you place it over a wooden table. The additional UBS ports help a lot.

2016 version changed a few things that made it a little harder to find those functions. I don’t understand the rationale behind moving functions from left to right on the tool bar. Problem to sync up with Google Calendar continues to cripple Outlook, which my major app. Come on, Microsoft. This is Home & Business Edition!

Lots of storage in a portable device; somewhat easy software accompanies it to enable simple file backup

I just got this, but so far it has been easy to set up and use. One downside is that it’s noticeably weightier than a smaller capacity model I had, which makes it somewhat unwieldy on a USB connection hanging off of a laptop. Also, it gets warmer than I would prefer after a series of 4-5 minute transfers; that will bear some watching.

Other reviews have mentioned the short-lived nature of this hard drive. I can’t comment on that because I have only had it for less than a month. However, I have done a few entire-PC backups on it using Acronis software and it works perfectly. It took me a few tries to get the Acronis settings the way I wanted them, and at one point it was taking over 15 hours to back up something that should have taken far less time. The drive just kept going and going and going–no damage resulting from the long period of use. Will have to wait and see how it all shakes down, but for right now it’s great and super-easy to use (at least with a PC-can’t comment on Mac usage).

If you have used a Seagate external HDD before, the quality didn’t change with this one. Thickness is about twice the 2TB external HDD (pretty slim). Nice exterior finish.
