Built with a compact form factor and ready for on-the-go usage, the 5TB Expansion Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from Seagate is preformatted exFAT, meaning it is compatible with Windows and Mac right out of the box. This hard drive provides a storage capacity of up to 5TB and connects to your host system using its micro-USB 3.0 interface, which also provides bus power using an included USB 3.0 cable, meaning that no external power is required. Copy and saving data is easy – simply drag and drop. Also included is Seagate’s Rescue Data Recovery Services.
Please note that reformatting may be required for use with Apple’s Time Machine. Also, Rescue Data Recovery Services is not available in all countries.

I love the portability with this storage device. I’m a Digital Media/Photography student so the space comes in VERY handy as I work on projects both at home and at school. And I love the textured design, it’s aesthetically pleasing to me.

I had no great expectations given the capacity of this drive. I put this thing to the test and, at first, it was just so-so. I found that the factory had formatted this drive as NTFS (VFAT can’t run this large.) but they made the block size only 4k. When I reformatted it to 32k NTFS it came alive. The response times went down and it just worked better for the work I ask it to do. Your mileage may vary, it all depends on what you need. This guy powers from the USB connection, so make sure the device(s) you use can handle the extra draw…it uses way less juice than older USB hybrids I’ve owned.

It works well and with greater bandwidth compared to legacy drives. My only hope is it will be extended to even greater capacity!

Effortless and quick setup on 2010 MacBook Pro with USB 2.0; light and unobtrusive, a remarkable leap forward from the heavy, powered LaCies that this drive replaces. What a difference nine years makes in the world of digital technology!

I have used Seagate 4TB external Desktop drives for years, but chose to use a smaller portable drive. So far so good, but more importantly, I really like the size!

With external hard drives, the key issues for a basic user like me are: will it work right away without any hassle, and how fast will it copy files? And then you can think about things like how rugged it is, or how cool it looks. For the first issue, working right away, the Seagate portable is top notch. I plugged in the USB to my older MapBook and was immediately able to see it and start copying files with no issue. For the second issue, of speed, it was more of a mixed bag. Copying around 12GB of data from the laptop through the USB connection took a bit over 10 minutes. However, copying from a different external drive running on Thunderbolt was noticeably slower. If you are only using the external drive for regular backups and taking files on and off, this is a great option. If you are running active files from the hard drive, like local streaming of media files, it is probably too slow for consistency.

Of all of the ones I’ve bought, they work well and only one went bad after a while. I just filled it this one up with quality audio, video, photos from an event and notes for the client. These things work well, and the prices have come way down (like a COVID panic stricken stock market). I put raw footage on them for clients since they are cheaper to buy that SD cards. they are light, small and mail cheaply. Plus everyone has a USB drive.

I like that you don’t have to use extra software to use the hard drive for a back up device.
