Add space, consolidate files to a single location, or free up space on your system’s internal drive with the 18TB Expansion Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from Seagate, which is preformatted exFAT, meaning it is compatible with Windows and Mac right out of the box. This hard drive provides a storage capacity of up to 18TB and connects to your host system using its micro-USB 3.0 interface. Copy and saving data is easy – simply drag and drop. Included is an 18″ USB 3.0 cable, an 18W power adapter, Seagate’s Rescue Data Recovery Services, and Toolkit backup software.
Please note that reformatting may be required for use with Apple’s Time Machine. Also, Rescue Data Recovery Services is not available in all countries.

Excellent Hard Drive for the price.

It is slower and noisier than I expected, but that is not a problem for me because I use it for automated backup and do not usually interact with it.

paid 179 for this drive. Great price compared to the WD or Lacie options. It is a great storage device for my still and or Video storage between jobs. Pretty good for editing with 4k proxy in FCXP or PrPCC.

Item is listed as functional on both pc and MacBook, however it does not work on Mac. I have exchanged this item twice now and have decided to return the item to purchase a different hard drive because this simply does not work on my MacBook Pro 12.1. Terrible use of my time.

I own three of these drives, which house the 8TB Seagate Archive Drive. These are not speed demons, but they are not intended to be. I am currently using two for alternating Time Machine backups under macOS (Sierra) and a third for long-term offsite storage. Although hard drives are always a crapshoot, I’ve had no problems with Seagate external drives as backups since I started using them when they maxed out at 2TB. Odd are good you’ll get a good one of these.

I’m using this as a big local backup drive for a 5TB and a 2TB working drive. It serves well for this purpose. Like others have said, transfers tend to start off fast and then settle into slower speeds. This makes it fine for backup, but probably not recommended as a working drive for photo/video editing. Drive noise is negligible. Will the drive eventually fail? Who knows, but most drives eventually fail – that’s why I got this one as a backup after all! At least this one’s relatively cheap so replacement won’t break the bank.

We immediately attached this drive and backed up our system. Have owned many Seagate external hard drives and always been happy with them

I needed a place to backup my system and 3 internal drives and this 8TB, USB 3.0 drive has worked perfectly for me.

Love this drive. Small footprint for the capacity and it runs really quiet! Forgot I installed it. It is sitting behind my screen backing up without a hiccup. I highly recommend this.

Plug and play compatibility with Windows 10. Time will tell if the drive lasts.

Drive sees USB 3.0 ports as USB 2.0 on my machine and shows a warning every time it starts up. Seagate advised updating drivers. No improvement after doing so. Seagate then said a bad cable shipped with this unit — but ignored my request for them to replace it. The plug that goes into the drive is not like any USB connector that I have ever seen. No idea where I would find another one. On a Windows 7(64-bit) pc, with a quad core CPU and 6GB of RAM, it took five and a half hours to back up 174GB of data from my internal HDD to the Seagate Expansion drive. By comparison, on a Windows XP (32-bit) computer with a 2-core CPU and 2GB of RAM, it took approximately an hour and a half to transfer 232 GB from one USB 2.0 drive to another. Seagate’s response:4TB Expansion drive is not marketed as a fast drive, however our Backup Plus portable 4TB Fast drive is. Their advice: by another computer with USB 3.0 drives and hope it works. Really?

The plastic case makes an annoying vibration sound when operating. I used a small piece of wood on top to damp the vibration.

For context, I am using a Linux mini desktop as my primary home platform. I reformatted the drive with the EXT4 file system. It is one of 4 expansion drives in my configuration. 2 of the other expansion drives are backups (using rsync), while this and one other drive are my primaries. I am moving a net of around 20GB of data per day onto these drives (adding around 35GB and removing around 15GB per day). All of the drives are between 60% and 75% utilized. All 4 expansion drives are connected via USB3 interfaces. Now for my review. I have found this drive to be very reliable and reasonably fast. While writes are noticeably slower than reads, they are still much faster than USB2 drives. In spite of the hard disk not having lightning fast rotational speed (I think it is a 5400 rpm model), it gets the job done without significant delays. When I move a large quantity of data in a short period, the drive does get warm (certainly not hot). It seems to cool off relatively quickly during periods when I am not moving data. During times when I am not using it, the drive autoparks (reducing power consumption and wear/tear on the drive, itself). Bottom line, I would recommend this as a good option for anyone seeking to expand their storage footprint.

Cost efficiency and wonderful quality.. Above all, I just made a transaction in Apr, 2021. As you know the shortage of semiconductor, my order is delivered in Oct, 2021. But I’m sure B&H keep their keep promises to customers. It’s wonderful!!! thanks.

I use this to simply store images in all formats, and some documents. It is stationary and not subject to periodic movement. It does the job as expected. I have other Expansion drives that all do the job and at a fraction of the cost of other units. Speed is not important for this function.
