recently our company got a contract to build a private waterfront wharf.. We ordered marine grade pressure treated hemlock and pine.. the beams consisted of 12×12`s, 6×12`s and 6×8 purlins. We didnt want to have really rough looking cuts by using a chainsaw so the Sawsquatch was in order. The saw performed amazing cutting through such large timbers, mind you on the larger ones i had to make multiple passes on the 12 x12″s and 8x 8’s but its far better than using a regular 7 1/4 saw. the motor didnt bog down one bit cutting through the lumber, in the 3×8 pine deck boards it cut clean through with its 3-11/16″ cut capacity . Though weighing in at 17 lbs the saw is very balanced and glides along nicely.a few very nice extra features i liked were the rafter hook which allwed me to hook the saw on to sawhorses keeping it in arms reach instead of setting it down on the ground. The auxillary handle which screws on and off adds additional control when i made long cuts. The 2nd best feature on the saw for me was the bevel table which has 1 degree markings all the way up to its full bevel capacity. making much much easier setting a specific angle compared to most other saws which only have markings on 5 degree increments. The only flaw on the saw that i could find has nothing to do with Skil but with the Frued 40 tooth blade.. the stock blade is a 1/16th thin kerf blade, it does cut clean but with such a thin blade it warped after only moderate usage.. had it been a full kerf blade like frued makes for tablesaws or mitre saws the warping with be a non issue. All in all i highly recommend this saw to the proffesional timber framer, framer or deck builder

We have been putting the 10 1/4″ Sawsquatch SPT70WM-22 through its paces in our timber frame shop. We previously were using the Makita model and wanted to try the worm drive instead for the ripping capability and power. We are glad we did! This saw has become a favorite for tenon cutting and ripping.Pros: -Feels solid-Good weight for use in our shop at 16.45 lbs.-More power for ripping -Cuts cleanly through a 4x timber-Great for 4″ tenons-Comfortable to use-Good bevel capacityCons:-Blade guard handle does not allow a lot of clearance as it slides past the handle-It is hard to see the back side of the blade if cutting on the left side of the lineWe have used both the Skil blades and the Diablo blades. For everyday use, the Skil blades are preferred as they are more solid. For ripping, the thinner kerf of the Diablo blade is preferred. We recently used the saw on a project that had intricate joinery and were very pleased.

Be aware of the worm drive set up and hold saw accordingly, the power pulls saw slightly towards motor side

I received my Skilsaw “Sawsquatch” SPT70WM-22 a while ago, since I have had the saw I have put it to a lot of use. I have built several decks using it, I use 6×6 posts for my deck supports and I cannot explain how nice it was to be able cut a 6×6 with 2 passes! For hand rail posts I use 4×4’s – if you cut a 4×4 with a 7&1/4″ saw you invariably get an ugly ridge from where you had to cut on both sides of the 4x…not with this saw, one cut and done!Out of curiosity I used the SPT70WM-22 to rip a soaked 6×6 post I had laying around. I set the blade at full depth and started cutiing – it plowed right through that 6x. If you are thinking about getting this saw I say go for it, you will not be disappointed.

Great for cutting live edge slabs, but can get bogged down.

If you have to cut anything larger than a 4×4 then you need this saw. Not only is it larger than your normal 7 1/4 circular saw but it is powerful too! It will keep on cutting even with a dull general construction blade. This worm drive system saw is powerful with it’s 15 Amps motor. The motor stays cool even when cutting hard wood all day unlike other saws with their straight shaft designs. This model SKILSAW will increase your productivity by making a one cut pass instead of two with a smaller saw on large wood products.SKILSAW has built in several handles to tackle those odd angle or complex cuts where it takes two hands to make the cut. One handle can be reversed for left hand cuts. It has a degree marker for making angle cuts that is spot on with no guessing. It also has a built-in wrench storage slot to make quick blade changes for different materials and cuts. This saw will make the DIYers look like a professional with it’s many features. SKILSAW uses Magnesium and Aluminum in its construction to make this saw lighter with more long lasting durability.

Great saw! Has all the power you need to rip through anything. Ive been using it to rip live edge slabs and it works great! Very happy with it!

great saw we needed the additional power and depth to cut some specialty wood ceilings.

this saw is heavy but like all worm drive’s it has a lot of power I love the one pass on a 4 x 4 and two pass on a 6 x 6 it makes my life a lot better and easy

Good saw just disappointed in skill for manufacturing in china. Skill use to be a solid American company made in America not anymore sad day

Keep making the saw lighter. Lots of $$ for an additional 1-1/4” of cut!

I do a fair amount of work with rough sawn hardwoods so having such a powerful beam saw makes my life much easier. I actually thought it would be kind of terrifying to run but its so powerful it cuts through everything without a complaint making it feel very safe (even ripping 2x dry oak on a 45). Plus the blades aren’t expensive like I expected!

OK. A little background on what I do. I am not just a DIY’er. I am a construction professional by trade and I do this for a living. It supports my family and I and is not just a hobby.Part of my job involves building decks. We use 4×6 and 6×6 beams and occasionally for the biggest ones 8x beams. Some of these are posts and some are custom hand rails. Without this saw, these would have to be cut with a chain saw and then planed and sanded until they take a smooth shape. With this saw I am now able to slice right trough the 4×6 timber and able to do 22.5 degree miter cuts. The saw is heavy but you have to remember, you are holding 3.75 horsepower in your hands. It is like a table saw in your hand, not just a typical “just enough” circular saw. It has a heavy plate with a good support while ripping. Amazingly, it weighs about 2-3 pounds more than the cheap 7 1/4 saws that do not have aluminum or magnesium on them. The miter angle locks in at 45 degrees, but with a push of a button, it can go to 51 degrees. The people that have come to watch me work my magic refer to the saw as “Son of Hercules”. It is strong, powerful and does not like being connected to a 16 gauge 100 foot cord. A 12 gauge is better as it allows the saw to run and full potential with no harm to the brushes in the motor. Can you imagine making your own miter box and slicing through crown molding for the perfect angles? A 7 1/4 saw could never do that. Yes I have 12″ compound miter saws but do I carry them everywhere I go? Would I carry it for one small job? No. This saw and a Miter box does it all. There are a couple of things I wished Skilsaw had improved, though: First, the forward handle is skinny and not as comfortable as I expected, and the ~3/16″ gap between the gearbox and the base when the saw is set to full depth could be eliminated. Some people have complained about the Diablo blade included with this saw. Many users mention blade wobble. I was able to almost completely avoid this problem during long rips by first making a small cut with a 7-1/4″ saw. Then I would switch over to this saw, enter the cut, stop just before the end of the cut I made with the 7-1/4″ saw, plunge in to full depth, and then proceed to finish the cut. This helped reduce the blade wobble to about 1/32″ per side and allowed us to make perfectly straight cuts. All I can say is COOL SAW!
