This is one of those tools that you use for the first time (borrowing from another carpenter) and immediately understand the importance of owning one. I ordered one online and was disappointed to find that the machining was terribly out of center and true, rendering the tool useless. However, I sent it back and received another in much better condition. The fine adjustments work well, so with it dialed in nicely, it’s a joy to work with. As most know, the sweetheart line doesn’t come close to the older Stanley planes, but these new ones do the job and they’re a must for any carpenter’s tool box!

Sole and sides square, sole flat, backside of blade flat, sharpened blade good to go. Stanley planes I own are top notch

The plane came wrapped in oiled paper. A good sign for an iron tool. It was sharp and ready to use after setting it up. It cut close to the edge of the tenon.

I received this plane in working condition. The blade was very sharp and useable from the box. The sides are perfectly square to the bottom measured with a machinist square and the bottom is perfectly flat. The blade measures .750 inches wide with the body measuring .753 inches. As with all my hand planes I also flattened, honed and stropped the blade noting that the blade was already flat and sharp, so very little time was needed to get it razor sharp. This plane has performed every task with ease in both hard and soft wood. I have not yet had to re-sharpen the blade after many hours of use. I have also removed the top body section to use just the lower portion to remove dried glue from hard to reach corners. Again it performed this task easily and was the perfect tool for the job. My only complaint is with the body’s edges. They were sharp and uncomfortable. A few minutes with some diamond files rounding the edges took care of that. I’m very happy with this purchase and highly recommend this plane to any woodworker.

Shoulder Plane is made very well. You will not be disappointed, unless yours comes with scratches all over the body. Although scratches do not effect the planes performance, shiny new would have been nice.
