Finding a “real” bench plane like this is difficult. All kinds of “new” designs, but this one works exactly like I needed it to work. It planed wood quickly and easily where it needed to cut.

I am going to preface this review by saying this is probably the best woodworking tool deal you will find at Home Depot. For the price, you cannot beat this plane. Yes, it is a Stanley, yes it is made in Mexico, not the US. However, if you’re looking for a US made plane, you’re going to pay a lot more for it. That’s just reality. This one requires minimal flattening of the sole and the iron is I would say about 90% sharp out of the box. Your mileage may vary but this was a very usable plane out of the box. The adjustments do take a little getting used to however if you’re confused, take to YouTube, it’s massively more useful watching someone adjust their plane compared to struggling by yourself.Anyway, the iron cuts well, the sole required minimal flattening, and it does a fantastic job on large jobs. For $20 you can’t beat it. If you want to spend $50 for a wood handle, go for it, but you’re likely paying for looks at that point.

I’m pleased with this tool, is much better than I expected

I picked up a good one. Mostly flat and relatively sharp out of the box. Needed adjustment but is working just fine. Not a high dollar super precision piece here, but incredible value for the price.

If you are not a skilled woodworker and mechanically inclined I do not recommend this tool. It is not easy to set or adjust. This is not the plane you learned to set in industrial arts class. I suggest you spend more money and buy a better model. This a very basic two-wheeler drive truck.

I’ve found you need some carpentry experience to work this tool right. The blade is somewhat difficult to set level but when you get it right, it works well. I have used it for several projects to include a farm-style dining room table I made. I used it to smooth out some of the edges on the 2x8s after I let them season in the basement for a few months.

I just received this as a gift so I can’t speak to its performance yet, but the quality appears to be excellent.
