I have mainly used fatmax tape measures, but this is an amazing size for workshop/house use. It has divisions for 16ths and 10ths on the entire tape, and extra clarity of 32nds and 50ths on the first 6″. I’ve already used it for spacing picture frames, as well as marking lumber to cut in my shop. It’s light enough to clip to your belt and not notice it, but also sturdy with a solid metal frame. 12′ is also plenty for most operations in a shop setting.

This tape measure is easy to use and feels great in the hand. I generally stray away from the smaller size, metal cased models and have preferred the more robust plastic Lever lock series as of late but this has quickly become my new go to for small home improvement projects. It is light weight and compact and quick to grab from a drawer or glove box. It has accompanied me to the hardware store many times over the last few weeks as the 12′ maximum is plenty for all homeowner DIY needs. And while I haven’t gotten whole lot of use out of the tenths scale, its a nice option for those who would.

StanleyPowerLockEngineer’s Scale12’Model 33-272This Engineer’s Scale tape measure means it can be used for rough measure of wood when selecting for a project all the way through to precision measuring when making joints, dimensioning lumber, or marking for mortis and tenons. One tape rule to have handy clipped to my pocket and ready to give me the level of accuracy for any piece that is being made. When cutting dovetails, having the scale down to 32nds means no excuse for sloppy dovetails!Engineer’s Scale using decimals is useful to find center and make quick calcs when dimensioning special wood for a furniture piece.I am able to use this tape in place of a 25 foot Stanley, a 6 inch ruler and an old 24 inch folding rule, so having one rule for everything suits me fine!

I got this tape because as a furniture maker, I don’t need a full sized carpenter’s tape. I was also intrigued by the engineer’s scale. First off, the ES side of the tape isn’t a true Engineer’s scale. It’s kind of interesting being able to measure in 10ths of an inch, it’s not something that’s actually needed. Outside of that, it’s just a nice, little tape measure. I wish it had a wider blade, but it’s not a deal breaker. I dropped it from my bench onto the concrete floor and it was completely unscathed. So if you’re in the market for a good, small tape, then this is one to consider.

JUST WHAT I NEEDED. THIS WOULD MAKE AN AWSOME STOCKING STUFFER. 1. THE BLADE IS STONG FOR A SMALL TAPEMESSURE 2. EASY TO READ/ QUICK GLANCE IS ALL YOU NEED 3. MY SON (2YRS OLD) BEAT IT UP ALOT EVEN DROPPED IT FROM ATTIC AND WORKS FLAWLESSLY 4. COMPACT TO LEAVE IN POCKET , CAR OR UTILITY DRAWER AT HOME. I WILL BE PURCHASING A 2ND ONE FOR SURE !

This tape measure is compact and lightweight. It does not have all the features of a heavier duty tape measure but this is great if you need to carry it around with you. For smaller projects, this is great.

I wanted to write a review on my tape measure. I always have at least two types. I carry this one when I’m off the ground. I love that it’s made of quality parts and is lite. Very dependable and a great warranty.

Great little ruler. Perfect pocket size. I don’t think a carpenter would like it as it has no foot markings. I find the tape itself a little narrow; print is small for me. The package describes it as an “engineer’s scale” whatever that is. I was surprised to see that it’s made in Thailand.

This is a very nice little tape that comes in handy to carry around at all times. What I do is remove the belt clip, and simply carry in my pocket.

I have for years only bought Stanley tape measures and I have six or seven of various lengths. Like all the others this one is well built and will be used by me whenever I go shopping in one of the big box stores to check the sizes of materials I am buying, for example, is this bolt really 4″ or is it 4 1/4″?

Typical Stanley quality – this thing can take a beating and measure accurately.

Even though it is a engineering tape measure it can be used for so much more. I have been using it to build a dresser and with the precision measurement it helps with making sure the drawers are squares. If you looking for a tape measure to keep with you all the time this is the one for you.

Stanley PowerLock tape measures have a long, well-respected history. The respect is well deserved; PowerLocks are solid, tough, take a beating, can handle some dirt and long lasting. My tape is an “Engineers Tape” meaning it has 1/16″ markings on one edge of the tape and the somewhat unusual 1/10″ on the other edge of the tape. I actually find for a lot of work the 1/10″ can be quite useful. The first 6 inches of the tape are in 1/32s and 1/100s for more detailed measuring when necessary. The hook on the tape also moves (purposely) for accurate inside and outside measurements which is an absolute requirement in my mind for any tape to be considered good. The PowerLock would get five stars except for one thing…the standout is really not very big, at about 3 feet. I like long standouts for the work I do. However, it’s important to know what you are buying as this tape is only 1/2″ wide. So that will make for a lesser standout but it also makes for a compact tape that is easy to put in a pocket, store in a kitchen drawer, keep in a globe box, etc. What I’m trying to say is that there is a tradeoff, this PowerLock is much more convenient to carry around than some tapes but since it is only a 1/2″ wide tape the standout is not great. The case is all metal, not this plastic junk that compromises the tape measure once dropped (and tape measures get dropped all the time), and will stand up to quite the beating. Put in your tool box, bouncing around in your car, knocked off a ladder, tossed to partner, this tape will hold up all day long. SOLID. The model number on this tape should you be looking for it is 33-272.

This is a good small tape measure. It locks well, retracts well, and is solid. I love the engineer’s scale. It’s not your tape to layout a room or measure ceiling heights, but you wouldn’t buy it for that. This is a good back up to your 23″+ tape or for small quick measuring. I like to carry it onsite when I know I don’t have something big to measure. The negatives would be no useful standout, but this also adds flexability for other uses. The other is it still gets kinks/creases like every other tape I’ve ever used. I would still have these all over the house and at work.

This is the perfect kind of tape measure to keep in your everything drawer or somewhere within quick reach. The 12′ length is perfect for measuring out furniture placement or verifying space before something is purchased, hanging artwork or other household tasks. It has a metal body and will withstand repeated drops without issue and is light enough for anyone to use without tiring easily. I would recommend removing the clip, it’s small enough to fit in a pocket and the clip is tight hard to hang if what you’re hanging it from it too loose or tight. The two biggest disadvantages are how lightweight the measure itself is. It needs to be light but that causes it to bend quickly if extended too far without support. Also the lock isn’t tight enough. It is easy to extend or compact when the lock is fully enguaged.

The tape measure is the right size and fits well on a belt or a pocket. The opening and return is smooth as glass. At first I did not know it was an engineers tape. However I found out about it and like the tape measure. My preference is still a larger tape with the traditional markings, but that is not what this tape is. The best thing about the tape is the smooth operation both in, to return, and out to measure. Well made product.

I got this to use in my wood shop as a light weight tape to have on my tool apron. I love that I can have it on me at all times without adding a lot of weight. I’ve found that I really like using the tenth increment side as it makes a lot of shop math easier.
