The silver 3.5″ USB 3.0 SATA III External Hard Drive Enclosure with UASP from StarTech lets you connect a 3.5″ SATA III hard drive (HDD) through an available USB port. The enclosure delivers optimal performance with a USB 3.0 connection and is backwards compatible with USB 2.0/1.1 host connections.
Enhanced with USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP), this 3.5″ SATA III enclosure performs up to 70% faster than conventional USB 3.0 when paired with a UASP-enabled host controller. Using a more efficient protocol than the traditional USB BOT (Bulk-Only Transport), UASP reduces latency and significantly increases transfer speeds while reducing processor usage to utilize the full potential of the SATA III hard drives.
With support for SATA I/II/III, and large capacity drives (tested up to 14TB), this HDD enclosure is compatible with virtually any 3.5″ SATA hard drive and can greatly increase the storage/backup capabilities of your computer.
The 3.5″ USB 3.0/SATA III enclosure features high-quality aluminum construction, ensuring durability. UASP is supported in Windows 8, Mac OS X (10.8 or above), and Linux. Moreover, UASP delivers 70% faster read speed and 40% faster write speed over traditional USB 3.0 at peak performance.

I have not used this a great deal as yet , it seems to work well for my purposes. It was very easy to set up, very quiet, and easy to use.

Love how compact these are. Takes up a lot less space than a traditional AC-powered external hard drive. Easy to install your internal SATA drive inside. My only complaint is that the two screws (which keep the drive from sliding around once its installed) are very difficult to screw in. Took me about 15 minutes of struggling to get 2 screws installed. This is why I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, I would still recommend this product though.

The SATA drive went into the enclosure smoothly and is working great.

This is a quality piece, and is easy to put together, and I recommend it. My only very minor gripe is that it would be nice if the two different sized screws that are used for assembly were separated and identified – they are so small it’s hard to tell the difference between the two and i fumbled around a little bit figuring out which screw goes where.

It works as advertised. You need a small phillipshead screwdriver.

Works very well and an excellent buy for the price, and I like the slide power switch in place of a momentary on/off. It stays on if the power is interrupted. I would have given it a 5 except, as others have noted, the aluminum case edges on both ends are very sharp and can easily cut if you don’t pay attention to avoid sliding your finger along any of the edges. Before installing my drive I used a file to slightly round off the sharpness – both inside and outside edges – that’s 16 edges in all including the insides. I would have preferred an activity light at the same end (or maybe both ends) as the power switch, the activity light can only be viewed from the end opposite the switch. I made a modification for that by drilling two 1/8: holes close together in the case side above the internal light transparent casing, now I can see the activity from the switch end assuming nothing is put on top blocking visibility to the holes.

It works very well with a 6TB drive. My only complaint is the activity light is a bit too bright. Not a bit issue.
