The black USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5″/3.5″ HDD from StarTech delivers full, instant access to any 2.5″/3.5″ SATA (SATA, SATA II, SATA III) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD), without having to mount the drive in a computer or install it in an external enclosure. Large capacity drives (tested with up to 4 TB 3.5″ and 1 TB 2.5″ drives) can be used to enhance your computer’s storage/backup capabilities. Connected to the host computer through a single USB 3.0 SuperSpeed or USB 2.0 connection, the HDD docking station provides a convenient, plug and play storage solution that delivers instant access to the hard drive, without requiring a reboot.
Relying on the outstanding data throughput support of USB 3.0, the HDD docking station is capable of transfer speeds of up to 5 Gb/s, making it the fastest way to access data from an external drive. You can double the value of this hard drive docking station, using a SATA to IDE hard drive adapter (SAT2IDEADP), which enables you to use any 2.5″/3.5″ IDE hard drive in a SATA hard drive dock slot. To ensure compatibility with your computer system, the docking station supports all of the leading operating systems, including Microsoft Windows (8/7/Vista/XP/Server 2008/Server 2003), Apple OS X (10.9/10.8/10.7/10.6), Linux, and Google Chrome OS.

As soon as I placed both my original drive and my new drive to be cloned the duplicator smoked and fried both of my drives. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

I purchased this StarTech duplicator specifically to create a backup cloned copy of my system disk while it was installed in the computer. The description in the B&H web site specifically says that it can do that. Unfortunately that is in error. The instructions that came with the device specifically states that it will only clone drives when they are removed from the computer and placed in the Source HDD1 slot. This makes my system backup just a bit more difficult but not impossible. However, beyond that error, the device seems to function quite well reading and writing to detached hard drives that are inserted in the device. But I have yet to put this device to hard use.

I had purchased this to access my hard drives since purchasing a new computer with a NVMe M.2 drive and access my files, I have found more uses that make it even more handy to have around. I used the clone feature to make a copy of a hard drive on my original computer and then kept that nicer hard drive for my use before giving the computer away to a friend. I have several hard drives and didn’t want to get another external case just to occasionally access a drive now and then. This allows me to store the drives and access only the ones I need. A very useful device to have!
