The cut got caught up inside the saw blade. Had a time getting it out!

This 16-piece hole saw kit seems to be a good kit for the weekend DIY handyman. Most of the hole saws are sharp, however, a couple of the larger hole saws, 5 inch and up, could be sharper. The smaller saw, 3 inch and down work very good. I was able to cut holes in 3/4 inch and 1 inch stock with no problems. The larger hole saws seem to have a slight wobble to them. Hard to tell if that’s normal for large hole saws. PLEASE be aware that in my opinion the larger hole saws should only be used in a drill press. If for some reason the large saw’s would bind-up and come a sudden halt you could break some bones in your wrist! A lot of the newer drills have very high torque which can increase the odds of hurting yourself. The kit also includes a 1/4 inch drill bit a mandrel and wrench.

OK for light duty.

The drill assembled easily. I used a drill press to cut the circles. The results were very good.

Good quality 16-piece Hole Saw Kit from Steel Core. Easy to store molded case measures about 6” x 8” and 2” high. The cutting cups are made of heat treated carbon steel with black oxide finish that resists rust and corrosion. They are one inch deep so obviously they cut to a depth of 1 inch. Great for cutting holes through drywall, wood and plaster. Also a nice assortment of sizes ranging from ¾ inch to 5 inch. Standard size to fit most drills. Also includes a 2 inch long ¼” drill bit with mandrel, drive plate and a hex wrench for tightening.

For the money, this was just what I needed to make some 3″ holes in 1/2″ birch plywood. The parts came covered in oil, so you have to spend a few minutes with some Simple Green, and the drill part wasn’t ground very sharp, but it did the job well. Just don’t spin it too fast, and go part way through until the drill comes through, then finish from the other side.

I have recommend this hole saw kit with reservations. First a note of caution. Do not use the larger hole saws in a hand held drill. If the saw bites or balks into the wood you could break your wrist. As will be seen in the photos attached, the 5 inch saw could be a little sharper, and needs to be balanced or maybe this is normal with larger saws. I was using my drill press at the lowest speed, about 740 rpm, and it stopped twice. I was using an old pine shelf, so not really hard wood. I went to the 3 inch saw and the 1 inch saw and you can see they saw through quickly with no wobble. A decent price and also a reinforcement plate, looks like a door striker plate, to put on with the mandrel, to add strength to the larger saws.

One core bit in the store is close to 20 dollars especially the larger sizes. I couldn’t find a set in store that had the variety or the price. I needed this to make a yard game set. The quality is great. I’ve broken serveral center bits with other sets.

This is an average quality product but it did exactly what I needed so I feel like I got a real bargain. I needed the 4″ blade to cut a hole through the exterior of my house for a new dryer vent. The blades are 1″ in depth so I made two + passes to cut through, but effortlessly.
