When I received this tool, I was unable to close the jaws. I had to force the handle to get it to close. After inspecting the problem, I found the wire cutter scissor blades to be binding against each other and only loosened after forcing the pliers closed a few times, which is a minor manufacturing issue. In addition, the stripper does not have different sizes for solid and stranded wires. The wire sizes are the same on both sides of the stripper. These two issues reduced my overall rating to four stars. The tool is versatile, having 8 sizes of wire strippers, a light duty plier tip, a 6-32 screw shear (the most common screw for electrical work), wire cutter and wire bending hole. I like the textured padded handles that will reduce fatigue. The handle is spring loaded, keeping the stripper open for easy use. It also has a simple safety lock to prevent injury and handy for storage. The price is a bit excessive for the average handyman, but seems to be in line with other quality electrical tools. Despite the issues described here I recommend this tool if you do enough electrical work on our car or around the house to justify it’s price

Here we have an excellent set of small gauge wire strippers. These things work great! I routinely strip wires in the 24 gauge to 30 gauge range and have been looking for a good accurate tool to get the job done. Well, I am looking no more. These strippers have found a permanent home on my workbench! In the pictures I show a piece of 14 gauge wire that has always been difficult to strip. This tool handled that wire perfectly! If you deal with low voltage wiring like I do, this is your tool! Get one!

Works like a champ. I’m into model railroading and work with a lot of small wires. The Steelman Universal 30-16 AWG wire stripper makes stripping a breeze. And with the handle lock it fits in my tool box much better that the one I have for larger wire.

Steelman Wire Stripper and Cutter, 30-16 AWG, 6.5-Inch – Occasionally I need hook up hardwired doorbells, intercoms, speaker systems or move thermostats all of which are low voltage. Thinner gauge wire is used and these wire strippers are great for working with both solid and strand thin wire without cutting into the conductor and damaging it. In addition to stripping insulation from 16 to 30 gauge wire, they have a built-in wire cutter, #6 screw shear and crimper. These wire strippers should never be used on 14 and 12 gauge or larger house wiring.

Definitely a professional quality tool. I worked for several years in electronic manufacturing and during that time I used quite a few strippers. This one is very good – sharp, accurate, with exceptionally comfortable grips. It goes all the way down to 30 gauge, which is just about hair fine (used to be used for ‘wire wrapping’ connections). I have some 30 gauge wire on hand, and this tool strips it cleanly. No way this tool could be improved.

I don’t know if mine is an exception, but the first thing I had to do was wipe off excess oil before using it. It is a nicely built pair of strippers. The two halves are held together by a screw, so you can adjust it as it wears out, or sharpen it if you need to. It is fairly comfortable in your hand, with straight, coated handles. The latch doesn’t catch on your pocket – a good thing if you use your pockets for holding tools like I do. It can cut fine wires cleanly. It does a good job of stripping small wires. It has a larger range then a lot of strippers for small gauge wire. It will see a lot of use on my work bench, as well as when doing terminations in the field.
