Designed for home and personal users who need to store and share photos, videos, and documents, the DiskStation DS220j 2-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is an entry-level NAS for personal cloud storage that delivers an intuitive user interface and safe data protection approaches for easy digital asset backups from computers and mobile devices at no additional cost. It is equipped with two drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5″ SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5″ SATA hard drives and SSDs with a drive bay adapter. It is capable of read and write speeds of up to 112 MB/s.
The DS2120j runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 1.4 GHz Realtek RTD1296 Quad-Core and its 512MB of DDR4 RAM allows frequently-used files and applications to be quickly accessed. Also featured are two USB 3.0 Type-A ports which allow it to be connected to external drives or other peripherals, and network connectivity is achieved via the integrated Gigabit Ethernet port, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications. The DS220j is also able to function as a multimedia solution for management, streaming, and playback.
For those who require RAID support, the DS220 supports RAID 0 and 1, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.
The DS220j is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer a 92 x 92mm fan to help keep the system running cool at all times, its noise dampening design of 18.2 dB(A) makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.
The Synology DiskStation DS220j 2-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, a 60W AC power adapter, a power cord, and an RJ45 LAN cable. It is protected by a limited 2-year warranty.

Purchased this little unit to use as a small CCTV NVR. Surveillance Station is a great piece of software. Excellent unit for a home security system.

It does not have a functional O/S pre-installed. One must update it first. I got many errors in attempts to get drives to be recognized by the device. I am still trying — but you might not be willing to spend several days trying to get it to work. However, the drive I was using was brought into question. It was a brand new 16tb NAS drive. I returned it. When my account is refunded, I might try another NAS drive. If it fails again than I’m going to return the DS220j to B&H.

Bought this to replace my now obsolete WD Mycloud. I do like it, but the learning curve is obscene and the instructions are non existent. Downloaded the manual, but it was unhelpful to say the least. I had to set off on a random adventure to figure out how to make the backup and how to use the many and various apps. Come on guys, get your act together – you are making products for real people! (I’m a retired electronics engineer and physicist) My backup took 24 hours – still don’t know why. However, it is nice that you can drag and drop files and make a manual backup. Not many options like this for a NAS system at a reasonable cost. So once you figure it out it is a nice backup system.

I’m using it for general backups and media storage. It can run a few kinds of media servers on top of that, web services if they are not too taxing, and you can expose it to the outside world if you manage to poke the right holes in your firewall. Not super computationally high powered, it’s certainly fine at storing and serving files, which is what it needs to do.

I consider myself quite technical and I’ve had to do a lot of reading to figure out how to get this set up properly. I’m only using it as a JBOD for nothing other than Time Machine and in the very short time I’ve had it, it’s been working very well. It’s been quiet and reliable and I hope will prove to be a very reliable replacement for my very old Time Capsule.

Despite downloading eight publications from Synology and consulting tech support, the closest I came to getting Synology software to recognize the NAS on the network was when I connected the NAS directly to my computer by ethernet cable. That didn’t help get the NAS onto the network. B&H graciously took the device back, prepaying the shipping.

As I am not very computer or tech savvy I had no trouble getting this device up and running It was so rewarding to see this device in action simple and user friendly If I can do it you can do it Enjoying all the storage

This works great for my purposes. It just works. Setup or modifications can require some reading, but this is a pretty simple unit to use for people who have some computing knowledge. I love having storage and backup at my fingertips.
