Built with a quad-core processor, an AES-NI hardware encryption engine, and Btrfs file system support, the DiskStation DS1520+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is designed for small offices and IT enthusiasts. Two built-in M.2 2280 SSD slots and Synology SSD Cache technology allow you to boost system I/O and application performance and, with a scalable storage design, you can start small and expand the storage capacity with the Synology DX517 as your data grows. This NAS is equipped with five drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5″ SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5″ SATA hard drives and SSDs for data storage. The data stored on this NAS, which includes videos, music, photos, and documents with up to 2048 user accounts and 2000 maximum concurrent connections.
The DS1520+ runs on the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron J4125 Quad-Core that is paired with 8GB of DDR4 RAM, both of which allow frequently used files and applications to be quickly accessed. The NAS is capable of achieving sequential read speeds of up to 451.28 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 451.18.
Also featured are two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and two eSATA ports which allow it to be connected to your Windows or Mac system, and network connectivity is achieved via the four Gigabit Ethernet ports that support Link Aggregation and Failover, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. For those who require RAID support, the DS1520+ supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.
The DS1520+ is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer two 92 x 92 x 25mm fans to help keep the system running cool always, its noise-dampening design makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses. The Synology DiskStation DS1520+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, an AC adapter, an AC power cord, and two RJ45 LAN cables. The Synology DS was purchased to replace an old server that had quit. I was able to protect the data and get the unit up and running easily.

This is a go-to device to setup on-site backup of workstations and servers via the Active Backup for Business. Then we connect Hyper Backup to an S3 storage provider for online backup that is cheap and efficient.

I use the 1520+ for media storage including photo and video backups, Mac and Windows backups including for Time Machine and a windows based separate solution. I also use the synology backup solution for a Linux server. I’m running several docker containers and have had nothing but excellent results. I bought it in a bundle with 14TB drives and despite some concerns about possible drive compatibility there has been no I’ll effects. I added NVMe cache storage but for my use cases that doesn’t really do much for me. I’ve been impressed with the versatility over all and the power to run docker containers is pretty impressive. It works very, very well.

This is the best personal use/light business NAS for your dollar that you can buy today. Synology makes a fantastic products that are easy to use and configure and compatible with any of the mainstream software makers that you may deploy on it. This NAS SPECIFICALLY has advantages over even the updated versions that Synology has made. Things like cache storage capacity, default RAM amount, processor speed and process handling. Very easy to use and clean looking GUI and a surprisingly low profile in case you have it on your desktop. Not sure what your need for a NAS may be but if you want one to run a Plex/Media server I can assure you this will be all you will every need for a long time. This will take care of many and most of your home entertainment media. With a proper setup using Docker and container builds for your programs that monitor your shows, music and movies, this NAS will operate flawlessly and allow you to go almost completely hands off when it comes to obtaining, sorting and displaying your media. Some of you may find the drive bay locking feature helpful if you have curious children or you are in an environment where a little bit of added physical security is needed. The front USB port makes transferring media that you already possess a lot faster than using the browser transfer method. You will be pleased at the rubber supports that curtail the unit from sliding and furthermore since not everyone can afford fast, large capacity HDD’s all at once to fill the 5 bays, this NAS is able to be upgraded to accept another array of drives via an supplemental external bay. That way you could improve the quality of your drives on a time frame that better suits you and transfer/swap the data later. Lastly don’t be fooled by the mimicked version of this NAS that has the AMD processor in it. It’s trash and not compatible with some of the software architecture and processing threads needed to run a successful and problem free NAS media server.

We had a DS1515+ that had the power supply die in it, so bought this one in hopes that we could recover. Put in the drives from the old unit, powered it on, ran through a quick migration wizard, updated a couple apps, and we were back in business.

What can I say? Upgrading from my DS1515+ that I had for more years than I can remember was as smooth as silk. I moved the drive into this device and it walked me through a migration that took only a few minutes. As far as the device itself: It’s speedy, does a great job serving as my photo and file storage device in my home, and, most importantly, the media server that all TVs in my house are hooked up to via Plex. I held off on the newer, AMD-based version, because folks mentioned that the Ryzen CPU had issues with Plex and transcoding.

Haven’t had the system up and running too long, but is working as expected. Populated with 5 WD Red Plus 10t drives. Set up and initialization went very smooth. Best advice, go to Synology and read all documentation/User Guide, it will make your life easier if you are not used to setting up a NAS.
