Built with a dual-core processor, an AES-NI hardware encryption engine, and dual M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots for cache acceleration, the DiskStation DS420+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology is a compact NAS for data sharing, video streaming, and photo indexing among IT enthusiast and home users. The DS420+ is equipped with two drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5″ SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5″ SATA hard drives and SSDs. Using its two drive bays, this NAS will allow you to store and share a large number of files with up to 2048 user accounts and 1500 maximum concurrent connections.
The DS420+ runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron J4025 Dual-Core with a burst frequency of up to 2.9 GHz, and its 2GB of DDR4 RAM, which can be upgraded to 6GB, allows frequently used files and applications to be quickly accessed. Using its dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, this NAS is capable of sequential read speeds up to 226 MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 225.74 MB/s, as well as encrypted reads at up to 225.99 MB/s and encrypted writes at 225.91 MB/s.
Two USB 3.0 Type-A ports allow it to be connected to your host system, and network connectivity is achieved via the dual integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports that support link aggregation and failover, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications. For those who require RAID support, the DS420+ supports RAID 0 and 1, 5, 6, 10, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.
The DS420+ is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer dual 92 x 92mm fans to help keep the system running cool at all times, its noise dampening design, with a rating of 19.8 dBA, makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.
The Synology DiskStation DS420+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, a 90W AC power adapter, an AC power cord, and two RJ45 LAN cables. It is protected by a limited 3-year warranty.

Super easy to install and set up on all machines. Fast and reliable access to all the files. I’m just using it to edit videos and photography, no streaming, so I feel that I have more speed than I need.

There are plenty of apps that you can download and use with the NAS. I am using it to backup old photos, music collection, and business files.

I bought this unit in 2018. It never worked. Trust me, I am plenty computer savvy, been working with computers since I was 16, majored in engineering, took coding … I’ve even built a computer mother-board senior year of college. Now I am a busy physician. I bought this unit in the hopes of backing up my computers, but the garbage never once worked. I tried emailing and calling Synology. THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY ZERO CUSTOMER SUPPORT. I tried asking an IT person at work — no help. I tried asking Geek Squad at Best Buy, and they couldn’t figure it out either. By the time I figured out it was complete garbage, it was already too late to try to return it to B&H. I ended up wasting over $1600 and months of hassle trying to get this to work. Trust me: don’t be a fool: NEVER, EVER BUY THIS GARBAGE FROM SYNOLOGY.

The Synology NAS DS420+ was priced fairly and with fast, free shipping, receiving the items was seamless. The NAS arrived in perfect condition inside excellent packaging. This was another good experience buying from B&H.

This my third Synology NAS. I’m currently only using it as a backup destination. It is working fine in that role. I cannot comment on the other services Synology offers.

So far its worked pretty well its fairly simple to use. I wish i could upgrade with to 2.5gb Ethernet. I’m not a huge fan of the synology software. With Sylonlogy Drive, if one of your client computers gets disconnected (if you a fresh windows install for example) you can’t reconnect to the same backup task It doesn’t allow you to edit the connection. You have to start a new one backup task and lose connection to your restore points. I am looking into building my own Unraid NAS.

This was a great upgrade from a ds418j, very easy to move existing disks over. I find it faster and quieter.
