I initially bought theEdimax AC1750 USB adapter and it was very disappointing. After doing a bit of research, I came across this adapter which uses the exact same high-speed Realtek chipset as the Edimax version and decided to give it a try (other TP-Link products are known to be reliable). Plug-and-play support for Windows is excellent, I didn’t even need to look for a driver or use the installation disk. The Edimax adapter was incredibly slow on Windows, but this one posed no problem. The internal chipset used for this adapter is identical to the one used in the Edimax AC1750, the Realtek rtl8814au. I found working Linux drivers at: https://github.com/zebulon2/rtl8814au The adapter itself looks very nice on a desk and comes with a black-and-aluminum stand. The antenna is much wider and more reliable than the one found on the Edimax adapter, and has the same 180 degree rotation for adjustment. I would highly recommend this product to those looking for a USB wireless adapter, especially in a dorm/apartment/room that doesn’t get a good wifi signal and/or doesn’t have any wired LAN ports.

There is no notice of this limitation until you try to install the drivers. So I now have a non-returnable item. Fortunately, my daughter, who has a Windows 10 machine has not opened hers. So, that one can be returned.

the wifi on my motherboard wasnt strong enough to keep a good signal. this one seems to be much more consistent.
