This is a switch with an interesting use case. In an commercial deployment I think Unifi is targeting customers intrerested in their higher end power hungry devices like the Protect PTZ camera or their new door access control system. Or for users who need connectivity in buildings without normal temperature control or HVAC. In effect this is a basic layer 2, 10 port unifi poe switch. So what’s with the price tag. Well… It’s an all metal chassis (effectually on big heat sync) that’s rated for temperature extremes from -40 to +140 degrees F. That’s basically the majority of most places on their coldest winter night to their hottest summer day. However this is not an outdoor rated box. It still must be indoors or at least shielded from the elements and direct sunlight. It also has a massive poe budget for its size. 430 watts up to 120 degrees F and 240 up to its max of 140 degrees. Each port is rated for up to 60W of 802.3bt poe++. And that’s where your money is going. Additionally this unit is plenum rated so it can be tucked in ceiling or closet for reaching and powering perimeter security and control devices. There no sfp connectivity but it does have two non-poe copper ports for chaining or unlink. For the pro-sumer or home user this would work well in an attic or garage where Temps are concern but weather is not. I’ve been using mine for two years. I had an issue where it froze during an update but it recovered following a power cycle. It does require a unifi controller and does not have a console port or stand alone gui. I’m very happy with it but would only recommend it to users who need its exteme durability.

This is our 2nd Ubiquiti Industrial Sw. but the 1st purchased from B&H. This is important to note because we needed it quick and at a reasonable price. B&H was the best price and had it in stock. The switch came in on schedule and well packed and works great in our harsh mfg environment. So kudos to B&H and Ubiquiti. Cheers

So at more than twice the cost of a standard Unifi 8/10 port POE switch why get it. Well if you’re asking then you probably don’t need it. The USW-Ind is a POE capable 8 2 all copper switch for install in plenums or areas that are not temperature controlled such as attics or garages. It’s rated for extreme temperatures but not wet environments. It also features a high output power supply of power hungry APs or cameras like the new PTZ. Its very heavy and well built. The all metal chassis acts as a heat sync. Past this it’s a pretty standard Unifi managed layer 2 switch with VLAN support. It will require a Unifi controller for management and does not feature a stand alone management GUI. Setup and updates are staight forward through Unifi. I’ve used mine with only one issue in roughly two years. It froze during an update. But recovered following a power cycle.
