The WD 5TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is a compact, portable drive designed to work right out of the box with Mac systems running macOS 10.13 and later. It comes with both USB Type-A and USB Type-C cables, so it’s compatible with both current and older systems. As a bus-powered drive, no external power sources are required. For protection, it has built-in 256-bit AES encryption and password protection. Users can also download the WD Discovery and WD Drive Utilities software to help manage their data and drive.

The WD My Passport for MAC is so easy to use. No formatting required. I just took the compact external hard drive out of its box and plugged it into my MacBook Pro to backup. Files copied quickly and have plenty of storage left.

I copied over a few GB of data before this thing stopped working. At first I could not copy anymore into it, and then it just went AWOL on the device list. Nothing I tried, using different utilities on a Mac and three different PCs could get it to be recognized. Now I have to send this thing back with a bunch of personal data on it somewhere.

I have 2 of these drives, one for photos and one for my backup, and every time I have them plugged in to my MacBook they dismount from my computer on their own in the middle of a process, causing Lightroom to shut down while I’m working. This has happened since I first got them. My previous WD hard drives did as well. I can no longer imagine an external hard drive that doesn’t do this it’s become so predictable.

The drive works perfectly. Plugged it in and time machine automatically wanted to back up the computer’s hard drive to the external hard drive. Backed up the whole computer in under an hour. Fast, and I’ve used it a couple times so it does seem reliable. The drive is a lot smaller than I thought and probably fits in a pocket (but I wouldn’t carry a delicate hard drive in my pocket!) but the size is great because it saves space for other USB drives in my small fire resistant safe. My only real complaint is that it seems to make a little bit of noise but then again, this is not a flash drive/solid state drive, it is a mechanical hard drive with moving parts so of course it will make a little bit of noise. It’s noticeable, but definitely not annoying.

Opened the box, plugged it in to a USB port on the MAC, clicked once and it began working seamlessly with Time Machine. Admittedly, that was only 10 days ago but it is still working fine and building up an archive of backups, which is all I want it to do, so I’m very happy with my purchase.
