The WD 5TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is a compact, portable drive designed to work right out of the box with Mac systems running macOS 10.13 and later. It comes with both USB Type-A and USB Type-C cables, so it’s compatible with both current and older systems. As a bus-powered drive, no external power sources are required. For protection, it has built-in 256-bit AES encryption and password protection. Users can also download the WD Discovery and WD Drive Utilities software to help manage their data and drive.

Got this for additional backup for my data. Works well right out of the box. I don’t trust the cloud and I don’t like monthly payments for data storage. Windows 10 (windows 7 backup) stopped backing up my data successfully because of some undeclared file size restriction so the S/W provided with the drive was welcome with the caveat that my license will expire in several years and I’ll have to pay to use it. I’ll do something different when that happens. All in all I’m pleased with the purchas.

I’m using this to backup video files and images. I’m a professional designer who uses a ton of equipment. This one was a slam dunk as far as usability, size, performance and convenience. Some software needed to be installed for it t pop up – but that is pretty typical. I’m using it with a laptop (macbook 13) and a desktop computer.

During this past year I have purchased 6 of these drives, as I have previously found them to function properly. Of those 6, only 2 have functioned properly. Of the last 2 purchased, one crashed the computer immediately when I tried to download images. The second one appeared to function properly for 4 days of image downloads, and on the 5th day none of the files could be seen or accessed. I was on a wilderness trip to remote Alaska to photograph Grizzly bears and was now without any means to download my images. Now that I am back home, I hope those images on the second drive can be recovered. It seems these external hard drives are now being poorly made and without adequate quality control. My recommendation is DO NOT BUY the WD Passport.

I got a Toshiba hard drive off of Amazon and it works well, but it is not very fast. I got this product at B&H and it is so much faster. The design is futuristic and stands out more than any other object on my desk. That’s why I gave it 5 stars. Thank you B&H, and thank you WD My Passport.

I absolutely love My Passport for Mac. I transferred all my images, I take lots of pictures, have many generations of old family recipes and documents stored into my laptop hard drive, its a great way to reduce the space being taken up. Simply drag, drop files to and from the Mac/computer, organize the information and I’m able to share as well. You can also activate a password if you’d like. What a wonderful accessory to my laptop, its small, easy to store and keep on my small desk, easy to transport, easy to install. It definitely seems of great quality and durability. I would definitely recommend the My Passport Mac.
