The WD 5TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is a compact, portable drive designed to work right out of the box with Mac systems running macOS 10.13 and later. It comes with both USB Type-A and USB Type-C cables, so it’s compatible with both current and older systems. As a bus-powered drive, no external power sources are required. For protection, it has built-in 256-bit AES encryption and password protection. Users can also download the WD Discovery and WD Drive Utilities software to help manage their data and drive.

This is the worst external drive I have ever purchased, and I have purchased many through the years! I bought this to use as a Time Machine backup. I should have been worried right away when I could not click on the Privacy Policy during setup, without the setup freezing and, thus, having to start anew. It did not work on my Mac out of the box as touted; I had to reformat the drive. I managed to get one backup done, but there were no files in it. It would not do automatic Time Machine backups; I need to eject the drive and reconnect every time to get it recognized. Then, there are still no files in the backup. In addition, it was a ridiculously hard process to do an online warranty with Western Digital, and it’s not even a device that is listed in their support menu! Buyer beware!

First off, I’ll start by saying that I am extremely brand dependent when it comes to backing up my digital files. I currently own multiple external drives from companies like HP, LaCie, WD, and iOmega. So far I must say that this drive is my favorite. The next best is the LaCie because i’ve dropped it a bunch of times and it absorbs the shock perfectly without damage. This drive arrived in no time at all, well packaged. First thing I noticed when I plugged it in was the response time which is about twice faster than any of the other drives I have used (all using the same firewire cable). The transfer rate of data was incredibly fast as well. The drive doesn’t get hot compared to the other drives I use(d). The size makes it fit in most men’s jeans pockets and definitely any purses. Overall I love this drive and will most definitely be buying more of them for my family and for myself as well.

I needed to dump a lot of video and pictures off of my laptop. This gave me a good value for the price. I did price checking and B&H was the cheapest even with shipping. I had a little bit of trouble with the password. That was a bit frustrating and it also dumps a lot of icons and software on your machine. It was worth the money though.

It performs back up ok on iMac Monterey correctly But can’t write single files on disk ???

I am not computer savvy and am grateful that it was so easy to install and begin backing up. Id had an older one for 6 or 7 years that did the job, and finally died. Its death may have had to do with a sketchy port on my computer and Ill be getting a new computer soon. This passport does something else w/ cloud backup that I dont understand. One of these days Ill call WD to ask about it.

I bought this WD 2TB My Passport drive because I had already bought a 1 TB for my laptop and really liked it’s size and usability. The 1 TB I bought while in Florida to back up (clone) the SSD. It fits easily in my laptop carry bag. When I got home, I really needed one for my desktop SSD as I had been using a full-sized WD HD & always had to attach a clumsy connector device. This one is SO MUCH EASIER! Plug it in and run my cloning software. BTW, I have ALWAYS used WD drives because I had a failure with another MAJOR brand and I couldn’t get satisfaction for their service department. I have 4 always connected to my desktop for photo backups, and a couple of loose, bare drives.
