The WD 5TB My Passport for Mac USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is a compact, portable drive designed to work right out of the box with Mac systems running macOS 10.13 and later. It comes with both USB Type-A and USB Type-C cables, so it’s compatible with both current and older systems. As a bus-powered drive, no external power sources are required. For protection, it has built-in 256-bit AES encryption and password protection. Users can also download the WD Discovery and WD Drive Utilities software to help manage their data and drive.

This is a perfect external HD. The included software works great on my Windows 7 Pro computer with 4GB of RAM. It runs in the background and does not slow down the computer. One recommendation, if you have it auto-backup the entire user directory, do not have it backup the AppData folder. I would highly recommend unchecking this folder. Having it backup that folder CAN slow down your computer slightly, since files are created in that folder with nearly every program.

It came quickly but it wasn’t until I plugged it in to my Mac that i discovered it was formatted for Windows. I purchased a “My Passport for Mac” to replace an earlier version of the product that worked well for 5 years. Installation of the HD and WD software was simple enough. Apple Time Machine software initially performed the backup routine but stopped working after a day or two. It could be that I created a software conflict between WD software and Time Machine during set-up or the something else. In any event, deleting the WD software from my Apple HD fixed the problem and the WD backup works flawlessly in the background. I would definitely buy the WD My Passport drive again.
