With the 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD it is easy to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software for Windows or Time Machine for Mac. In addition to simplifying the backup process for both Windows and Mac computers, this hard drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption to ensure stored files remain secure. The My Book Desktop drive features a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfers and comes exFAT formatted for Windows and Mac, making it easy to get up and running in no time.
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. Reformatting is required for use with Apple Time Machine.

It does the job but I miss the blinking light that shows when the drive is transferring data.

The drive works great. I’m using it as an external drive for my XBOX One.

Always used WD drives and always have good results. My current setup has it attached to a Linksys EA9500 via the USB port. In this case, a couple of notes. The drive wasnt accessible until I reformatted it to NTFS. Did not come out of the box that way. The other thing is if you access it by a computer connected to your wireless NW, file transfers, deletes etc. are slow. By laptop I was getting response of 6-9 files per second. Using my desktop with an Ethernet connection that speed was 110-130 files per second. Both computers have upper level i7 processors. Otherwise, working great, no problems. Also be aware you will NOT be getting 8TB of space. After reformatting and removing setup files I showed 7.27TB available.

Buy one formatted for your particular platform. Although that in itself is a challenge as well if your system is only slightly dated. Because I refer their products to my clients, clients who aren’t so eSavy, the hoops I had to jump through to format this drive for my mac was so PC. I know they would have great difficulty formatting the drive. For Mac: They assume everyone uses Apple’s newest OS. So, if you don’t, then you’ve got to wipe it and format it for your particular platform. It didn’t make sense for it to be so convoluted a process. But, I would still buy WD products over all others.

Unit as expected and works great.

Device works just as advertised. Plug and play. Only 4 starts because when the device is on, particularly when its reading/writing, it pretty loud. It vibrates, almost a deep grinding sound. But its bigger and not an SSD so I get it.

When I first noticed this drive, it was too good to be true. 4 GB for this price, well after getting it home, connecting it to the computer, I always format new and old drives for compatibility purposes to my computer; well the message was the format did not take, and the drive did not show up on my desk top anymore, it just should down, and I did check for compatibility to a Mac. The other issue is this drive will slip out of your hand and off the desk or any surface that is hard, to get around this issue I purchase rubber feet. Great buy, but I do not think this drive is for a Mac. Yes, I’m returning it!

This is my 2nd one in four years, and I just got this one to backup my first one, which is a great and long lasting drive as well! These are silent, which is ideal because I work in music production where critical listening is key. The only thing I wish they had, but don’t, is some sort of tiny LED or status light to let you know it’s on, and maybe an on/off switch would be nice (unplugging it is how you turn it on and off). Otherwise I am completely satisfied and highly recommend!

The drive performance is as expected, even if a bit louder than I’m used to. It never occurred to me, however, that an external hard drive would lack a power switch like this one does. Lacking a power switch means the drive can wake up at inopportune moments, such as when the operating system for some reason decides to probe all the drives. When it does so, whatever application you are using can grind to a halt until the drive finishes waking up some seconds later. Because I use the drive only for backups, this is quite annoying.

To be perfectly honest, I buy most of my purchases on price. When I was searching for an 8TB drive, B and H photography came up as the cheapest price. They also offered a quick and reasonable delivery via DHL. I would recommend B and H for good price and good service. The hard drive is as expected from WD, working well.

I keep buying these hard drives because they last and don’t fail. I use these hard drives to store photos on. I have six that I’m continually rotating and updating. I keep three in a safe deposit box at the bank incase of fire or theft at home. My house was broken into and most of my hard drives were taken and I lost many photos. A Mac technician told me that to not use more than a 2 TB external hard drive that the computer wouldn’t handle it . but 3 or 4 tb work just fine. Very reliable these hard drives other brands don’t last.

I have used many WD external drives. No problems. I purchased this on 7/23/19. Started using it on 8/15/19. Already making a sharp bleep sound, which tells me it bad. Very disappointed.

This is the best external hard disk by far on the market today. Don’t bother with Seagate, this is the one to get and BH PhotoVideo is the place to get it!

Easy to use and a one-time cost. I used another brand and found out you need an annual subscription after I bought it. A great feature is that you can back-up files exactly as they are.

It is just a matter of connection and launch to begin using Time Machine to create backups. Simple and inexpensive.
