This external drive was the right size and right price. It was easy to hook up to my desktop and was ready to go to work in just moments. Everything I was looking for…

I needed a bigger backup and reserve store and since I trust WD I was waiting for the opportunity to buy it. Works flawlessly, fast , a tiny rumble on my desk but it’s understandable and it’s not even warm Great product … Great price

Bought several HD’s from B&H over the years (all WD’s). Why, because of the service, no hassle. As far as the 4Tb My Book goes, They have always done the job as expected.

I am very happy with this product. I recommend it and will purchase another WD product if I need one. I am a devoted WD user.

This device works fine, neither faster or slower than other similar. But the absence of any indicator showing that the device is “on”, transferring data, or is just active at all, such as LED light commonly present in older WD MyBooks and other brands, is quite confusing.

Did the job

Excellent in every way.

Set-up was quick. Runs smoothly, no problems. I wish the newer model had an indicator light, like the older version to let you know that it is running.

I have a 6TB unit I use on my Sailing Vessel primarily for recorded media. I’ve had this for probably 5 years or better. It is subject to extreme temperatures and humidity (I don’t use air conditioning). It installation is such that it is not subject to cooling as much as I would like it to be. As I am sailing, especially in rough weather, it pounds along with the boat and everything else on the boat. This unit has lasted and has always been reliable. I’m certain there have been units that failed prematurely, but I would suspect few and far between. This review is for a My Book, but all of my drives are older WDs and they have always been superb. I couldn’t recommend the My Book more strongly.

I was happy to see this available as a one day deal from B&H! I grabbed it, hooked it up to my MacBook Pro and everything works great! It’s always a good thing to have an external hard drive for holding your photos. The unit makes a little noise but nothing crazy to worry about!

Was told the drive came with great backup software already installed, Acronis? Turns out the software is NOT on the drive, but there is a way to obtain a free download of that software. The kicker is, that software will not work if youre trying to backup a Seagate external hard drive, which is why a bought the WD My Book. You can obtain a free download of WDs backup software, but it will only automatically backup the Documents folder of the Seagate drive, not the Music or Pictures folders. I should have purchased another Seagate drive to back up my current Seagate drive. The WD works fine, its just not very compatible with the Seagate.

This generation of 8TB WD My Book drives performs a bit better than the previous one! The WD80EZAZ hard drive this WD My Book unit is based on can manage roughly 180 MB/s sequential reads and writes. The older models that included hard drives like the WD80EZZX could only achieve about 130MB/s. That means the new models have improved by 50 MB/s. Well done, Western Digital!

I am using for 2nd copy of backup images and the drive is only online during data transfers. Arrives with drive formatted as exFAT. If using only with Windows, drive should be reformatted as NTFS to improve performance. I did this using Windows Disk Management (Computer/Manage/Disk Management) rather than bother with a WD utility. Drive does make more noise than older smaller capacity WD My Books but not as much as my computer’s fan. It does not have an activity light but that is not important with Windows providing data transfer information and taking care to eject the drive before removing power or USB connections. The only change I would like to see is a front or top side power switch.

It works great. This is my second hard drive by WD and they are great devices to back up my work.
