With the 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD it is easy to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software for Windows or Time Machine for Mac. In addition to simplifying the backup process for both Windows and Mac computers, this hard drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption to ensure stored files remain secure. The My Book Desktop drive features a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfers and comes exFAT formatted for Windows and Mac, making it easy to get up and running in no time.
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. Reformatting is required for use with Apple Time Machine.

I use this external as a redundancy back-up drive for all of my media. The drive is a little noisy upon idle but somehow quieter upon transfer but I’m not working off it so I don’t mind the noise as I power it down after backups.

I removed the drive from the external enclosure to run internally in my Hackintosh to replace one of my 1TB WD Black drives with over 62,000 hours of power-on time. Received a white label drive, model WD120EDAZ, with a manufacturing date of April 2020. Reported operating temperature usually fluctuates between 28C to 32C. One week in, I am pleased with its performance so far.

At the sale price I purchased this HD for, I am very happy. It is quiet, runs cool, and so far seems to stay connected through the USB3.0 port. I trust the WD brand and they have been very reliable for me over the years. This drive does NOT have SMR so that was a plus. It is a helium filled drive and has a 3 yr warranty. Huge storage for all my 4K video files. Very happy with this purchase.

Purchased this WD My Book to provide a local backup for my new Synology NAS. Unfortunately, the Synology Hyper Backup kept failing. Shared the error logs with Synology and they concluded that the WD My Book was a lemon (with input/output errors going to the USB). Super disappointing. Called WD and they said their products were not tested with Synology NAS. They were only able to offer me a refurbished replacement. Called B&H and they were not able to allow a return, since it had been more than 45 days since delivery. (The error didn’t show up until I had fully loaded up the new NAS, completed a multi-week cloud backup, and the local back-up task began running.) Have always had great luck with both WD products and B&H service in the past, but really disappointed in both of them this time.

ExFat formatting is supposed to be compatible with Mac and Windows. Anytime I want to access my archived data it takes me hours of runnings various diag software before Mac OS Catalina eventually mounts the device. If you value your time, look elsewhere.

The old software included on the HD destroyed my PC, a problem that could easily have been avoided by telling customers to download the software from WD’s website.

I use 2 of these hard drives to make bootable clones of my MacBook and iMac. So far so good. Time will tell.

I formatted with ext4 to use with Linux and mirrored my 4 TB drive. Everything works as expected. I knocked off one star because there is no LED to indicate drive activity. Come on-how cheap can you get? I suppose this a new trend that we will have shoved on us.

I use this drive for Time Machine backup for my 13 MacBookPro. I used the Apple Disc Utility to format the disk first, and it has worked perfectly. Because my MacBookPro is an older model and has USB2, FireWire and Thunderbolt ports, and this WD drive has USB 3, I had to buy a Thunderbolt to USB 3 adapter to get high speed data transfer to the drive. Unfortunately, these adapters are expensive. I wish this drive had a light to show when the disc is active (the previous WD external drive I used had a light, I replaced it only because it was full and I want to keep old backups).

Unfortunately it hasn’t have activity LED, but if you have soldering skill and equipment, you could made a little modification. The controller has two soldering points for the activity LED, which are named D1. Good luck.

This is the 3rd one i’ve bought and had no issues with any of them. I always surface test my drives before I start using them – all have come back clean!

Appears so far to be an excellent hard drive with a large amount of storage space. Is light weight and is decent sized. Does seem to vibrate a little more than my other drives when the disk is spinning, but that’s no big deal for what I’m using this drive for. The only bad thing that I have discovered so far is that it supposedly won’t work with Win XP (haven’t had time to try it out and make sure yet) which is one of the computers that I had planned on using this drive to backup.

We’ve purchased over 30+ external drives (Seagates & WD) over the years for archiving that plugged in and played immediately. I’m sure this drive performs well but going to WD site and downloading software to make it functional (hopefully) is bogus. It should be noted on the product page. We returned it. Thx BH for your stellar return policy. 5 stars for BH!

I use a lot of WD drives to back up my media and this 10 TB hard drive is fantastic. It’s robust and easy to use. The problem that some might have is the size. It’s a large drive so if you’re considering to travel with it, it’s too big.

I work in video, so I need lots of space! I use these as inexpensive archive solutions. Works great, never had a problem!

I can no longer access my files, and everytime I try it freezes my computer and I have to restart. Horrible purchase

Works Great Thank You So Much!

Received two defective units in a row, third was a Seagate, works works great and is much quieter than my WD drives, western digital is not what it once was.

I like the Size and Prices of B&H Products, and this 8TB doesn’t disappoint. Happy all round. A little noisy when operating it, though.
