With the 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD it is easy to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software for Windows or Time Machine for Mac. In addition to simplifying the backup process for both Windows and Mac computers, this hard drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption to ensure stored files remain secure. The My Book Desktop drive features a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfers and comes exFAT formatted for Windows and Mac, making it easy to get up and running in no time.
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. Reformatting is required for use with Apple Time Machine.

Just received it, (took 2 weeks to NZ!!) and got it connected, formatted, and put to work. So far so good. Always good value from B&H. Delivery time could be improved I think!

Have had issues with this drive before but it’s the most reasonably priced drive for the size. So, guess I’m trying it again. Wish it felt sturdier but I imagine that would make it cost more.

The transaction with B&H went perfectly and the drive is working well without any problem I ran tests on the drive and there were no errors and it works properly.

40 hours to transfer 4 TB? Compared to my earlier generation, WD 8TB external? And an audible hummmmm sound? No activity light? Nothing to like. I was able to location new copies of the older design, and bought those. This half-half split design is a turn in the wrong direction, for the 3 reasons up top here… I returned it as soon as the old-generation replacement arrived, then ordered 2 more of the older style!

After several tries trying to get the WD My Book to start backing up as my mac time machine external hard drive, I have given up. It has been three days and it has slowed to about 25 gb per day. I used to use Lacie and it completed a whole back up easily in a matter of 5 hours. Not sure what the problem is but after trying everything listed online it is still running slow. I cannot recommend this HD for use with macs.

This was the perfect choice for backing up my entire computer’s internal hard drive while I performed a complete reformat and reinstall. Very reliable and exceeded my expectations, plus B&H was terrific as always from purchase to speedy delivery. Top notch.

I just got 2 of these as well as 2 of the portable WD 4TB My Passport drives (B&H # WEMP4WDBYFB). WD’s portable drives are 5 stars, because you can password protect them and when you connect your drive to a new computer, there’s a small 30MB partition on the drive that acts as a virtual CD-ROM to autoplay the WD Unlocker softward. So unlocking the drive is as easy as putting your password in the pop up window that shows up. BUT… With WD’s My Book drives, there’s no such partition. There’s no easy way to unlock your drive if you plug it into a new computer! There’s software that comes pre-loaded on the drive that allows you to unlock your drive (WD Security), but if your drive is already locked, you can’t access it from another computer! I tried shrinking my drive in Windows 10’s Disk Management to create a new 30MB partition and copy my 4TB’s auto-play unlocking software in it, but it won’t let me shrink the partition. So if you ever want to use your drive on a new computer, you have to have a USB key with WD’s software on it. Why WD would make their My Passport drives so convenient to use on several computers, yet make their My Book drives so inconvenient is beyond me. For this reason, these drives should NOT be used by anyone planning on password protecting them and using them on new computers! Another minus is the plastic casing is about 50% bigger than the 8TB external drives from Seagate, so they’re not as portable, if that’s something that’s important to you.

I have owned several western digital drives over the years and the never let me down. I use this as backup drive and it works great. Tons of space.

Previously had 2 or 3 Seagates to handle my automatic backup needs. The most recent one stopped working after about 2 years, but never informed me that the backups were failing. I stumbled onto the problem. Seagate said the error indicated the drive was a complete loss. I replaced it with a Western Digital drive. It was easy to set up and understanding how to restore a file is easier than Seagate. The only shortcoming is that the auto backup may not run according to the schedule you set up. Others have complained about this. After some testing, it seems the backup will not be triggered if the PC is in sleep mode. As a result, setting the backup to run during the night does not work.

We archive show files that are just a bit under 1Tb each. Had issues with the WD 8Tb but the 4Tb seems to be reliable for our archive/storage needs with zero malfunctions in 30 + drives purchased during the year.

I own many WD hard drives and they are very reliable. I have had 2 new 18 TB ones for a few weeks and have had no problems with them.

I have had many of the WD disks fail. I use to only buy WD disks, however, I have started to purchase Seagate disks going forward. The warranty service is good, but you do have to always keep three copies of your data if you are using WD disks. They are not reliable, as they fail often. I was using them for Time machine backups, nothing challenging, and they just keep failing. Been using Seagate for several months now, no problem.

Reasonably fast with storage and retrieval of files! Very quiet! I use it for large photo files from several different cameras. An external storage of this nature is a requirement for the handling of digital photograph files!

When I received this item from B&H was not packed properly in a box no caution support inside so this was bouncing inside the box and I told them this and B&H given me 30 days to returned the item but I have no choice I needed to bak it up my files. Aside from sometimes this make abrupt sharp spinning noise I ignore it I wanted to save my files no choice of sending this back but after 4 months this item died and lost my files!!! My advice is if you received the item bouncing inside the box refuse it or send them back .

These drives are very frustrating. I purchased two drives… one for a primary storage device and the other to act as a back up. The first few days the drives worked grate. It took me about 3 days to transfer all of my data off of multiple external drives onto a single drive. Once I did that, the drives started to unmount themselves. I called technical support at western digital and they gave me a host of items to try… mainly unplugging the drives from the surge protector and plugging directly into the wall. Which means they have no protection from over voltage or surging… this is the first drive that I been told that can’t be plugged into a surge protector. After 2 weeks of using them, it takes about two hours to get them mounted and even when they are mounted not all of my files are available… these are garbage and would not recommend them to anybody. Ive ordered something else and Im just praying I can get my documents off these drives…. once I transfer the documents Im throwing these drives in the garbage. PLEASE DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

16TB is amazing, especially at the modest prices that WD brings. I buy these all the time.

This is worst then the one it is replacing on the WD Dianostic test 3 it only gets to 80% checked after 3 hours and after 8 hours will not go any further. The one it was replacing went to 90% after 3.5 hours and would not complete the test after 8.5 hours. WD support said it was bad. This one is worse. I want to return it. No one at WD Support is answering. WD has sure gone down hill, in the last 5 years
