With the 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD it is easy to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software for Windows or Time Machine for Mac. In addition to simplifying the backup process for both Windows and Mac computers, this hard drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption to ensure stored files remain secure. The My Book Desktop drive features a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfers and comes exFAT formatted for Windows and Mac, making it easy to get up and running in no time.
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. Reformatting is required for use with Apple Time Machine.

Both three of this at the current price to back up years of work stored in smaller hard drives. Great opportunity at this price to consolidate. We will have to see how they operate over time but I am reasonably confident in this brand.

For what it is, it’s great. As long as you don’t move it, it’s perfect.

Although it took a long time to deliver, I receive a good one.

Everything is fine with this hard drive. I’ve been using this series for a few years now. However, I was disappinted to see that the very same HD was put on sale for the president’s day weekend sale…

With only 1 USB port and no other type of connection, it took nearly 6 days to backup 5 TB. I wish they would have put day an “on light” so that you can tell unit is powered up.

When you need archive space at rock bottom prices, look no further!

I keep my old video projects on these and knock on wood, haven’t had one go down yet. I use them only for archival purposes and have a separate one as my iMac’s backup Timemachine disk. I would not try and edit off of these as I don’t think they are fast enough and the more you work a disk, the higher chances of it going down. Whenever I wrap on a project, I save the footage and project file into a folder so I have it in case a client needs to revisit it in the future. I got this on sale (12TB) for $250 so with storage this cheap, there is no excuse for keeping archives of all your projects. That being said, if I were a larger production company, I would probably store them on mirror’d RAID’s for less of a chance of losing them.

I use WD drives exclusively now, after years of mixing and matching brands. These are stable, they stack together with the same cords and plug-ins. This makes them easy to label, store and create backups with a basic hub daisy chain. The 12TB holds a ton of backup files and the sale price ($209) on the B&H Deal Zone makes it one of the most cost-effective per GB systems I’ve found. Given that any drive can potentially fail or become corrupted, over the years I am continually upgrading and double-backing up my drives. The WDs allow me to put several years worth of backups in one place.

This is the second one I have purchased. The first one (14TB), I returned promptly for it did not work right. This second one (16TB) is working fine, but it makes a loud thumping noise every so often that it breaks my heart when I hear it. I read that the thumping noise is normal (like really?), but I would rather not risk putting all of my data on one drive and have it fail in the future. If you know of a better drive than this, let me know. I have high hopes that the market will offer better than this soon.

Plugged the hard drive into my PS4 when I filled the internal drive. Plenty of space and great transfer speeds means I should be covered until the next generation of consoles comes out. B&H was a pleasure to do business with- I will definitely be back.

I used these WD 8TB drives as backup drives to my 8TB Glyph drives, which are faster. They work fine. I buy three drives at a time: a Glyph for primary and 2 WDs for on site and off site backup of large video files.

After suffering a recent external drive failure, I vowed never again to have only one copy of anything important. This is the answer to having redundant backups of many things. Photos, videos and essential computer stuff are all automatically backed up here.

Fortunately WDs tech service was responsive. Ive erased and reformatted many drives but the WD instructions were misleading and resulted in an unmountable drive. WD techies had to use an in-house tool to format. Reinstalling WD Drive Utilities went better, as they get erased in 1st step. You also must disable Apples put drives to sleep when possible as it interferes with WD sleep. All good now.

Good for desktop backup, solid feel and build. I prefer Thunderbolt for my MAC but the price is lower for USB 3.0

The drive would constantly disconnect on it’s own. I would have to re-start my computer and even then it mostly would not mount. I re-formatted the drive 2 times yielding the same results. I read similar reviews regarding this issue. I will be returning mine tomorrow and unfortunately have to upgrade to the double wide WD 8TB at $100 more : (

USB 3.0 is a plus. Nice sized storage for the price. Compared to my older 2TB WD drive, (circa 2010…which recently started dying!) I have noticed that it takes about 20 seconds for the drive to spin up and display the contents. Mind you, the drive is always plugged in and always on.

I have a lifetime of photos on my PC. I recently bought a MacBook Pro and wanted to have access to my photos. My Book has plenty of space to hold my lifetime of memories.
