I use this drive for regularly scheduled, automatic daily backups of all my data. A second identical WD 8TB drive is configured a bit differently and used for periodic archival / off-site storage purposes should the primary backup drive ever fail or should I wish to move all my data to a second backup system without touching my primary system configuration. Probably this is a bit of over-kill for some, but I come from almost 40 years in the computer industry and I cannot tell you the number of individuals and companies that have kicked themselves for not taking the backup of their far more valuable data seriously enough. If you’re into photography or video as I am, just think for a moment what it would cost for you to travel to all the places you’ve already been to in order to re-take thousands or tens of thousands of photos or videos lost because you didn’t have a backup to a crashed disk drive. The cost of these WD drives is nothing in comparison to that.

No problem with B&H – excellent as always. Drive hums louder than my other WD 8T (different model). Main problem was my computer (HP/Win7) would not boot with the drive connected. A little research told me it was trying to boot from this drive. It was formatted exFAT and while I could find no evidence that this would cause the computer to want to boot from the drive, I reformatted it to NTFS and it is now working. Too soon to comment on reliability but so far, so good.

I needed a solid way to backup my photography onsite. This hard drive is very solid. WD includes encryption (if you want) and auto backup (again – if you want). You work hard to capture, edit, and create great art, valuable data, etc… Don’t risk loss by not having a solid way to backup your work.

Have been buying WD drives since 2tb. This batch runs a little hotter but still passes 2 weeks of daily full testing, and I have drives with 18k hours run time. Sometimes have a failure but so far have been able to beat the warranty period and my expected health period.
