With the 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD it is easy to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software for Windows or Time Machine for Mac. In addition to simplifying the backup process for both Windows and Mac computers, this hard drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption to ensure stored files remain secure. The My Book Desktop drive features a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfers and comes exFAT formatted for Windows and Mac, making it easy to get up and running in no time.
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. Reformatting is required for use with Apple Time Machine.

8 TB of storage is a tremendous amount of storage needed for any videographer or photographer. And this WD drive is a solid piece for a great price.

I have had to repair dirty bit so often it is ridiculous! Any time there is a lost of connection! This drive should not even be sold! I have owned dozens of drives, I have a lot of experience with them. I once quit buying WD drives because so many failed on me. Only bought this since the company had been sold some time back. Big mistake! I will never buy WD again. I have had much better luck with Seagate. One other thing to keep in mind. All my larger drives are failing fast compared to smaller drives (3tb) I still use, after many years.

I was in need of more storage space, and short of buying myself my own cloud I resorted to two 10 TB hard drives. The transfer from my original 4 TB drive was slow, but that may be as much a computer issue as a hard drive issue. I never had any WD drives fail on me, and they are reasonably priced.

This drive is great. It is easy to setup. In fact, the set up is as simple as the form factor. I wish other tech companies would focus on simplicity as well as Western Digital. An that goes to B&H to for making the ordering process quick and simple!

Nice unit, has the space I need. It did have a technical glitch. It prevented my PC from starting up after a month of use. I unplugged the My Book from my tower and restarted it. That solved the glitch and then upon successful restart I plugged it back into my tower.

I am well pleased with the performance of this hard drive and with B & H’s sales, service and support!

No doubt this is a great product, the thing is how much you pay it and how fast you can get it. Definitely, both of experiences are pretty good for this offer.

I use this drive to store most of my documents and photos instead of on my laptop. Also a perfect tool for transferring lot of data created on my laptop to my desktop computer storage and archive.

I purchased this drive to back up an extensive photographic library. It’s a solid drive for a very reasonable price. It is noisy, but the din serves as the only indication that the drive is operating properly (no indicator lights). Bottom line: a solid drive for a great price.

I have a WD My Book drive and a WD Passport Ultra drive. The Ultra backs up regularly, but the My Book backs up only intermittently. Same setup for both. WD customer support is worthless. They are unable to determine the problem with the My Book drive; totally clueless. Beware of purchasing a WD My Book Drive.

Not the fastest drive in the world, but I have about 20 of these and they are all solid!

Quite and plenty of storage. A little slower transfer rate than HGST drives in separate external cases by benchmarks, though it is still fast enough to deal with all the tasks.

Looks nice. The speeds are good. In case you wanna swap the HDD in this case, you ought to cut the VCC leg of a flash chip on the board – shame on you, WD, for preventing people swapping the inside HDD.

Western Digital says it will work with both Windows and Apple products and while that is true, it will not work with Apple out of the box without you doing a little work. Its been a few weeks since I started using it and the best advice I can give you is to Google the subject of Western Digital Hard Drives for Apple. You will have to erase the software that comes on the Western Digital and install a software product that will allow the hard drive to be recognized by your Apple computer but once you do that you are good to go. So if Western Digital could have provided information about how to do that instead of stating on the box it works with both systems without more info, this product would have gotten 5 stars instead of 4. I’m looking forward to using it to back up numerous desktops and laptops because of its size capacity.

Writing this as FYI about my initial experience, in the hope of helping other purchasers. I have used WD USB-powered drives (1TB, 2TB & 3TB) for years with high confidence and no issues; this is my first experience with an AC-powered drive. I purchased two 10TB MyBooks as a synced image-backup solution. Upon connection, when the drive spins up, it vibrates noticeably if sitting on a hard surface. Vibration continues for 3-4 minutes, then the drive goes idle/quiet. Vibration returns every time the drive is accessed. Vibration makes a very annoying loud hum, audible throughout my office. I tried several types of felt and rubber feet, all of which cut the sound by about half. Then I set the drive (without the additional feet) on an empty “slim” DVD case, which dampened nearly all the sound, yet left the airspace on the underside clear for cooling. Both drives behave the same, so I assume the vibration and the occasional head movement when idle are normal. Maybe one or both of those come with the territory of high-capacity drives. B&H stood ready to replace them, but, assuming replacements would behave the same, I chose to keep them since I’d found a workaround for the noise, AND didn’t wish to shop for other drives that might or might not have the same problem. I deducted one star for the vibration, and hope WD will redesign the case to correct the issue.

Very slow and found it to make many concerning noises. I’m no expert, but it just doesn’t seem like the best option out of all the drives that are out there. It does seem to work, but it has trouble mounting to computers, both my MacBook Pro and iMac take 3-4 minutes to show the icon on the desktop and connect.
