With the 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD it is easy to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software for Windows or Time Machine for Mac. In addition to simplifying the backup process for both Windows and Mac computers, this hard drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption to ensure stored files remain secure. The My Book Desktop drive features a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfers and comes exFAT formatted for Windows and Mac, making it easy to get up and running in no time.
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. Reformatting is required for use with Apple Time Machine.

I have a movie collection spanning two sometime three drives. My transfer speeds have all been averaging over 100mbps. So far no problems. Came formatted exfat. If this thing ever crashes WD will get an earful.

I was surprised at the write speed (average ~140MB/s) when copying between disk drives. The unit is quiet. I was able to store many 256GB USB sticks and a few disk drives contents onto this… freeing them all up. I initially wanted to hook this up to my router so everyone can use it but the speed was a limitation (due to the router’s USB 3.0 port) so I’m just hooking up to one of the PC that shares the drive over the home network. Prices has gone down quite a bit so it made sense to get this one.

These work like they should, I have had no issues over the past 5 years of using there Western Digital drives. They are great to store my large video projects, not so great to editing off of, get a faster drive for that.

I have had great luck with WD drives and have many internal as well as My Books. This latest generation comes formatted in exFat. When I plugged the drive into my late model Dell the computer would not boot up. I contacted support and they suggested reformatting to NTFS. That solved the problem. Ironically, my Toshiba laptop had no problems with the exFat. I am now confident and expect a long life from this drive.

I am upgrading a few of my external drives to a larger size. I chose WD drives because of the success I have had with previous units.

Box says contents: Hard drive, various software, cable, adapter, and install guide. No software or install guide in box. Had to search web site to find info and software.

There is NO led to tell you when the drive is active, but it is LOUD when it is working. I have not put anything on it as yet and it sound like every 10-15 sec. the drive is active. I hope it well last?

I have several My Book drives and have never had trouble. I will use this unit for storage of my photo archives and backup my computer drive. B&H shipped the unit quickly. The packaging was in good shape and the security tape gave me an extra sense of confidence that all was in good order.

Crashed after a couple days of usage. Going to log into WD on Monday and see about getting it fixed or replaced. Wanna help B&H?

I have a lot of external hard drive but this one (quite new) worries me. So far speeds are 100mbps speed which is pretty sweet mostly. But when I transfer small files sometimes it slow down to a few kbps for some reason. But the one big issue was that it makes screechy noises sometimes and it kinda make me think there would be hard drive failure. It still works as it is but that doesnt sound good. I stand by on WD hard drive since I have a few of them along with Seagates.

I’ve always been a fan of Western Digital hard drives for over 10+ years, and this is one is one of their best. For being 8TB, the price is amazing. But most importantly, it’s super reliable and very fast at USB 3.0 speeds. I’m definitely looking to buy another one as a backup to this one.

We have been using MyBook 4T drives for our network backups for 3 years with no issues. We have out grown the 4T so we moved to the 8T. So far they are just as reliable.

It really is about the size of a book. The unit is reasonably quiet and does not seem to generate much heat for such a large capacity drive. I have not really tested the data transfer rate but it does seem to be fast enough. Its nice to have lots of spare space.

I bought 2 of these drives to replace 1yr old Seagate drives that, from day one, refused to connect to the PC on power-up. I would have to unplug the USB 3 cable, wait a few seconds, and plug them back in. Repeated calls to Seagate yielded nothing. I even replaced the USB 3 cables with expensive gold plated cables which did nothing to fix the problem. (one of the Seagate drives actually stopped running USB 3 and switched to USB 2). I had always used Western Digital drives as a system administrator on our large data servers where I worked, so I decided to just dump the Seagate drives and replace them with these. So far, I have absolutely no regrets. They come on when the PC turns on, and they are fast. We just have to see how well they hold up. At this point I highly recommend them!
