With the 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD it is easy to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software for Windows or Time Machine for Mac. In addition to simplifying the backup process for both Windows and Mac computers, this hard drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption to ensure stored files remain secure. The My Book Desktop drive features a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfers and comes exFAT formatted for Windows and Mac, making it easy to get up and running in no time.
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. Reformatting is required for use with Apple Time Machine.

This is my first HD larger than 4TB, and all I can say after about two weeks of use is that this drive has not only met but also exceeded my high expectations. Transfering data from my dedicated drobo iTunes library took actually way less time than expected. This 8TB drive is now serving as my main iTunes drive, hosting more than 6TB of data already. It actually goes to sleep a bit quicker than I’m used to from most other WD and HGST drives I own. at least it feels that way. Recovering from sleep mode takes about ten seconds, that’s not something bothering me for that purpose. This drive needs to be large and reliable first and foremost. Time will tell if it will hold up as well as the many other WD and HGST drives I do own or have owned. This single drive of course uses much less energy than having a 4-bay drobo running my iTunes library. The drobo is now the big backup container for several drives in my household.

This is my second of this particular kind. My 8GB is running our of room, so I figured 16 should do it 🙂 The price is very reasonable, speeds are fast and it looks nice.

This is my third WD USB drive — I keep getting them larger and larger. This 8TB drive will probably stay hooked to the my PC, while my older drives (2TB and 4TB) will shuttle back and forth to my bank safe deposit box with my redundant backups. (No, I do not believe in the Cloud)

It serves its purpose. Please make sure you back up all of your data. It’s not a fast drive or intended for work, rather for the sake of saving your data in case anything happens.

I’m disappointed it wasn’t plug and play on my EX4.

It works fine at excellent price. An advice, handle it with care. I have lost 3 hard drives due to accidental crashes.

I bought this to give me more room for all my backup files. I use it on my Mac Pro Tower with Time Machine. It’s very quiet. I was able to move my older 4TB My Book to my wife’s machine for backup and to use her much older 3TB My Book as an external hard drive so she now has more storage on her iMac.

I have 20 WD external drives, including about 12 Desktop. Most are full and are archiving/storing information. It was easy to print the contents of each in order to recall information. So far, so good regarding reliability.

works well and transfers fast!

I love these drives, I have had another one for 3 years and I haven’t had troubles with it. I have only had the 14TB for a couple of days so I cannot speak much about its longevity but so far is doing great.

This drive works pretty well for about a month plus now. The only thing that worries me that this new drive start to make some mechanical click sound. Not often but it’s there. My old 4tb wd mybook still works well without any noticeable problem. Conclusion: This still a cool looking, working drive by far.

Love Western Digital My Books and backup software; WD Smartware. I bought another 8 TB My Book for backup and wanted to take my old 8 TB My Book Duo offsite in case of a fire. Turns out the new 8 TB MY Book is not compatible with WD Smartware! And the new WD software that it is compatible with doesn’t do automatic backup every time you modify a file. I would not buy WD external drives again.

I had WD 6TB external for years, and currently have 4 of WD 6TB and 1 of WD 8TB – older versions. This new 8TB is without an activity light, and it produces a constant hum vibration which can be felt through the walls too, even though it doesn’t touch the wall itself. It’s not loud unless it’s quiet in the room and it is at 4ft height. At 2ft height and hidden I don’t hear it. The transfer speed is 1/2 of what it is on my old drives. 5TB transfer was forecasted for 48 hours, and while done in parts still took close to 40 hours. Unacceptable. Returning. Getting the old 8TB version…… hard to find. Bad copy? Bad design of taking the light away. Half speed? Probably a design choice. Hum? Maybe another copy doesn’t have it, but not a chance I am willing to take. It couldn’t develop the behavior after a while. Nothing attractive to want to get another copy to try.

I purchased two of these drives and both of them had issues when I tried to write to them. They would work sometimes, then about once per day I would get a message that I was not able to write to the drive. Both drives had the same issue so it was not isolated to just one drive. I called up WD and they didn’t have an answer so I’m returning them. I have about 12 other WD drives and they’ve all worked flawlessly but I would stay away from this model.

I feel confident with the Western Digital name. Had a much older smaller My Book Drive and was reliable. I think this is great reasonably priced drive for the size. Considering a larger one.

In the last 20 years I have used just about every flavor of external drive for redundant backup. I currently have 3 plugged in and running right now. It is whisper silent. The WD drive sounds like a logging truck barreling down a mountain with a driver learning how to shift through the gears. It literally vibrates my desk. You can hear it from 12 away. I have absolutely no idea how this thing is designed to survive with that much noise- and this is while it is idle! I now shut it off every time it is not actively backing things up. I probably should have returned it, but it was purchased back in November (4 months ago). Would not recommend to anyone if their data is important.

After a few years paying good money for cloud backup, I finally needed to use it to replace everything on my new computer. Ten full days later, I still didn’t have all my files because the cloud download created files on my C drive even after I directed it elsewhere. Never again. I’m back to my good old reliable WD externals for everything. I’ve always used them and believe in WD, but now I see they can handle all my needs for less money.

This worked well for me. Easy to use to back up my documents and pictures.
