Every WD USB drive I’ve owned over the last 10 years or so have been awesome. Reliable, consistently reliable, fast and well designed. They have always been a reliable way to backup for me, and have collected about 8 drives and will continue using WD USB drives. They have been great for portable storage as well as just backup. This 8TB is a great size for my purposes, to backup video and raw photos from all my other WD USB drives and computer. My only issue with WD is that their backup software is simply not reliable. It hasn’t worked for me any time I’ve tried ver the years as well as the latest version with this drive. It hangs, doesn’t backup, sometimes won’t allow me to close a window or cancel an action, not sure if a backup is running or not, progress bar often just stops moving and stays there for days without any progress (obviously something is wrong after a few days!). Just not reliable or consistent, so I use 3rd party software to manage my backups and that works fine. However, it would be nice if their software would work reliably so both hardware and software would work well together. Would highly recommend this drive as well as all WD USB drives!

Easy to set up. I had a few problems getting my pic backed up. BUT… How long will this WD last? My old WD 4TB just gave me the finger…… Your device My Book (S/N: WCC*********) has RAID configuration issues. Now what????

Having alot of options out there these days it can be confusing. This purchase was easy for us, Western Digital has been Fair and Honest with us….over many years. I actually still have a functional very old, 2005, maybe production date earlier, of an almost identical My Book for Mac 1TB used for my first Apple computer and others since. Running system OS’s sure do disable perfectly fine running Legacy equipments, don’t they!

As always, the service from B&H was perfect. The unit itself came with a USB3 cable that is too short (I’ll need to get a longer cable.) Also, there is no included documentation for the unit. It is plugged in but there is no indication it is working. It does show up when I view Devices in Windows. On the up side it makes no sound. I would not buy this unit again.

Great price for the amount of storage. This is my fourth external WD drive. All have been great. Only replaced the others because my library keeps growing. Haven’t had an issue with any of them. Word of caution for those using a mac and connecting this to a netgear nighthawk 7800 router to back up wirelessly. You will need to reformat with the MacOS disk utility to a macOS extended (journal) format before your mac can see it in finder. The format it comes in works perfect when connecting directly to the mac, but not so good when connecting to the netgear router. After that was resolved all works well.

Hi, I cant say much about the USB operation, as i shuck both drives, they are working on a DIY server. If you shuck them know that if you use a standard ATX psu, the drives wont start with sata power, you either need a Molex to Sata power, this will make the 3.3v connection not affect the starting of the drive. The drives have a high pitch noise, inaudible inside a case at 1mt, but on my test bench i could easily pick it up. That said, they work great on unraid or whs,

Good price and specs in a solid package. The main issue is that it is a very noisy drive. Bought it to backup videos and images, so it does the job well.

Where the transfer/backup speed with my 6TB WD My Book drives is about 65 mb, the 8TB drive transferred data at about 130 mb. Faster is always better, and when you can do the job in half the time, you have to be happy. I immediately ordered another five drives when the test unit performed so well. My ONLY unhappy point is that they reduced the internal drive identification/information area. I use it to record the topics and dates of the backup data. It was about 20 characters on the 6TB My Book and 5TB Elements series, but now it’s only about 10 characters on the 8TB. I have no idea why they would do that. I guess I’ll have to use notes taped to the outside of the drives to keep track of information that was so easy to record and change before. But the faster transfer speed is worth the extra inconvenience.

Easy setup and exactly what I needed. If using on a Mac, you have to partition and format the unit as Mac journaled to use as a time machine backup.

Unlike the last drive, this one had to be formatted for Mac, but it’s a simple process and WD provides crystal clear instructions. Highly recommended.

I have been using these units for 15+ years .I merge the data to a new one around every 5 years . I have only had one fail and recycled threw the website so far. They are intended for long term storage of large files . It isn’t a performance drive .
