With the 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from WD it is easy to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software for Windows or Time Machine for Mac. In addition to simplifying the backup process for both Windows and Mac computers, this hard drive features 256-bit AES hardware encryption to ensure stored files remain secure. The My Book Desktop drive features a USB 3.0 port for fast data transfers and comes exFAT formatted for Windows and Mac, making it easy to get up and running in no time.
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. Reformatting is required for use with Apple Time Machine.

I started to have a small problem with one of my older external hard drive, and realizing that several others of my external drives were approaching old age, I decided to stop by B&H to add a new disk to my array. I chose the 8TB My Book for the size, to be able to back up a Hatachi LifeStudio, two My Passport’s and a 2TB My Book for Mac. They are all on there now. I’m not sure if it is my older iMac trying to keep up with all the hardware, but the drive does seem to be a bit slow to register when waking in Finder, otherwise it runs well, like any WD. The only thing I wish it had is an LED operating light – I have it sitting on a very thin foam surface, and sometimes I can’t tell if it’s on, when its coming out of sleep. I’ve been extremely happy with WD drives, and this one meets my needs to make sure all my other drives are backed-up. It is a 5,400 drive, so it may take a bit longer to back up large folders, but name me an affordable external SSD with 8TB. And I do like the longer warranty and not having to go to an add-on service plan. Four stars just because of the lack of LED, even if I knew that going in, for 20 cents more, they could have added that to the package.

Great addition for my photography business. Fast transfer speed.

Fast and reliable. In the remote chance that their drive fails the warranty from Western Digital is superb. Always use more than one backup drive.

Excellent product and this new one is surprisingly silent! I’m using it as my Back Up Drive ( I already have three WD My Book HDs with different capacities )

I upgraded from my WD 2TB to this amazing size. Works like a dream. Wish they had LEDs to show that it’s working. Looking forward to loading all my data into this storage unit

You plug it in, and it does hard drive things. Really, what more is there to say about a hard drive?

I purchased this for the sole purpose of a destination drive for iMac Time Machine backups. It performs perfectly. I’ve relied on Western Digital in the past and have never had any issues with their products.

I have always had good luck with Western Digital hard drives. As a photographer I enjoy having such a large drive to store photos and video. I prefer WD over Seagate.

It needs to make some improvement. I guess It required clear instructions for how to download and than set it up. It needs to make sure that it has a light to make sure it is working. It needs on and off switch in case it requires to be shut down

Because of my age and lack of tech skills I was forced to call WD tech support. They were incredible. They walked me through the setup and didn’t leave me until being assured that I was happy with their product and it was working the way it should.

Worked out of the box and I started copying 10 tb of files immediately. It seemed a little slow to me but workable.

I just got this about 10 days ago I gave it four out of five stars. But it could be a five star winner. I use it for daily incremental and weekly for back ups of several drives. So far no problems, which is absolutely necessary when it comes to backing up irreplaceable data. Sure, I wish it were faster, but it is as fast as any other drive that I have used for back up, and while my backups are done in the background, I have not noticed any impact on my other operations. And at 14th, it is huge.! Thank you B&H for a great price and prompt service.

I bought two. One died in 10 days. Still within the RMA timeframe, thank god. Let’s hope the replacement lasts a lot longer. Not that I dropped mine, but have read reviews on these drives, not the physical drive, but the drive and enclosure, if dropped, even from like 1-2 feet onto the carpet will kill the drive. So i would highly recommend that these drives are stored on their side or somewhere where the HDD and its Enclosure would not drop or fall or knock over. Read Speeds were really good on transfers. I would get between 120-130mbs while transferring large files that were several GB’s in size. As far as Western Digital. It is the ONLY HDD, that i will ever buy. I have PILES of non WD drives that are dead and not working, like Seagate and Maxtor. This 8TB MyBook is the only dead WD that i have ever had. I have owned around 17 WD HDDs, and that its the only brand of HDD I’ll ever buy or use. SSD’s i cant comment on, as i usually buy what’s cheap and have yet to loose one. I would buy again. I don’t use these My Book drives constantly, but use them to back up a movie collection of several TB’s.

As usual B and H’s service was outstanding. As to the 4TB WD hard drive, this was a replacement for a 3TB WD drive used to back up my Synology server. The 3TB drive failed after approx 4 years. Because the new drive was formatted exFat instead of ntfs, I chose to purchase and install the exFat service for my Synology server rather than reformat the drive. This went smoothly and quickly. So far the new drive works well, but slowly. It takes twice as long to perform its nightly backup compared to the old 3TB. No real issue since it starts at 1:00am, but seems a step back in technology.

With my growing collection of photos and media files, it’s nice to have a drive that has lots of space. I notice good write speeds (~140 mb/s) as well. It’s still fairly new, but I expect it to last a long time as well.
