First, if you loose power or connection while writing a file to this drive, you will need to reset the dirty bit. You need a special hex editor to do this. You will have to find instructions online to know how to do it. I lost over 500GB of files recently. Today while trying to replace those files, I copied 84GB, the hard drive failed for some reason, and all 84GB disappeared. The drive shows 396GB free space, but there is less than 1TB of data. It should read around 8.4TB free! Disk repair software has not worked. Software to salvage files is not sizing them correctly. I will try to reformat the drive with NTFS instead of Fat. maybe it will make a difference. I have already sworned off WD drives once, and stupidly bought this one. NEVER AGAIN will I make the mistake of buying another Western Digital Drive!

On my desk the drive is noisier than I expected. I formatted the drive NTFS, moved over about 7 TB worth of files, got an error, ran chkdsk. Hardware error reported. I repeated the process and failed again. I’m returning it but so far the process has been painless.

I can transfer video from PC then play it on all my Samsung TV’s. It powers down when not in use so you can leave it plugged in to the TV. I’ve only had it a short while but it seems to be the same great quality of my other WD drives. I’m currently using 11 WD external drives on my PC’s, laptop and TV’s. I also have other brands but I now only buy WD.

I have a slew of WD hard rives – the 1TB Passport, 2 x 5TB Elements, a 6TB My Book, and now the 8TB My Book. Each has been a faithful workhorse, even with a recent little hiccup. My first attempt to back up to the new 8TB drive resulted in an unwritable sector. I contacted WD and went through their process of troubleshooting. Since the drive was irreparable, they immediately honored my warranty and, just a few days later, my new drive is backing up wonderfully. Given my terrific history with these products, I understand that one-off issues happen. The company was spectacular in their response and I am breathing a sigh of relief as my second backup set is fully transferred to the new drive now.

I was tired of the very loud noice that my 6 disk RAID produced, so I switched to this 14TB drive as my main storage. It is nearly silent and so far has been excellent. Highly recommended!

WD generally makes pretty reliable HDs. This newer My Book looks ok (except for no activity/power light) but it never made it past USB recognition. I tried it on 2 PCs and one Mac including switching out cables. Kudos to B&H for easy and prompt return.

Had started loading on overflow as a backup and within 3 months failed completely. Crashing my computer on boot and disk utility. Took it to hard drive recovery (If you’re in the Philly area I recommend tri state data recovery, don pulls off miracles) said it failed due to bad sectors. This is probable the 3rd western digital drive I’ve had fail on me over the years.

When B&H has a sale on the 12TB My Book, its a cost-effective way to backup a few years of select images and video jobs for storage. I’ve only had one of these become corrupted over many years of using them–and because the cost is reasonable I’m able to have double back-ups and not lose anything. Transfer is quick and easy to work on your files when connected. They store easily, and are dependable.

I have been working with WD products for 7 years and never had an issue so far, I added my 8 TB recently and is doing a good job overral, I noticed a noise that the 3 and 4 TB’s don’t have I guess is normal in this unit, I also noticed is a bit slower when transferring large amounts of data. I am using my 8TB as a back up unit for all my data. I have 12 3 TB of data that I would like to consolidate into larger drives and the 8TB unit is a start. I will buy more of them soon.

I have a number of these drives. The new iteration doesn’t have an activity light which is too bad. It also makes some muffled sounds when operating. Other than that it is operating as intended thus far.
