I ordered a two pack of these drives in May for expansion of our Synology NAS. We’ve been away from of our of office because of Covid, so I didn’t install the drives until July. One drive worked fine, the other didn’t. SMART info could not be read. Synology’s drive health test reported an Access Error. I went with an Ultrastar Enterprise-Class drive for reliability. They claim a 2M hour MTBF rate. I guess that counts only if it works out of the box. B&H wouldn’t help because the return window had passed so I have to get an RMA from Western Digital, and pay to send it to them. Then, in a couple weeks I might get a used, repaired drive back. This was the hassle I was hoping to avoid.

I just bought two of these drives. They arrived yesterday. One seems to be working fine. The other one never booted up on either of my computers. After multiple failed attempts, I am returning the dead one. I feel lucky that even one of the two drives worked. It’s a sad state of affairs when 50% is the new 100% here at B&H.

I bought these drives to replace WD Red Pro 3TB tjst are starting to age out in my two synced NAS boxes ( Synology DS415+ that I love). Have only had to install two in the last weeks and they came up right away after full surface checks. They run quietly, but that’s an individual perception.

I purchased these drives in 2018, so 3 years running, they have been in a Raid 1. Very fast and usable as a working drive with redundancy for photo, video edit, game dev. Programs are on SSDs, with scratch on SSDs. Get these if you want to have a reliable backup. Use the best or cry like the rest. Waiting on the 24TB. 16TB sounds nice.

I do music, video and photography. I ordered a pair of these Ultrastar 12TB drives to replace a pair of Seagate 4TB drives that were full. Installation was painless. Configured to RAID1, copied data from old drives using Windows Explorer. Everything running great. At my current data usage, I expect to use these for the next 3-4 years. I found this page at the HGST web site. I was able to check the warranty status of new drives by entering serial #. It appears you don’t have to register the drives. I would not buy any other model or brand of drive. The Western Digital gold series has been proven to last longer than many other drives. I recommend using this drive in a RAID 5 or 6 configuration as you will have the benefit of redundancy just in case any drive should fail.

Revising previous 4 star review. I had to return the hdd because after copying some files to it, it continued to spin continuously for hours…even though it wasn’t being accessed. It was impossible to stop the spinning, and the spinning noise was loud and intolerable. I’ve ordered a Seagate exos drive to try out as a replacement.

I have always chosen former HGST’s Ultrastar for its reliability. As I did a lot of research, I found that the WD Gold Ultrastar HDD, enterprise class, was what I should buy now, rather than WD’s red versions. The 6TB version of Gold Ultrastar is quieter and less power-consuming than 8TB or 10TB version. It’s also a lot quieter than my old 4TB Ultrastar that I purchased about 5 years ago. The power consumption is 7.0W when in operation and only 5.9W when idle. If you need a drive with a higher capacity and a lower power-consumption than this 6TB version, you need to get one with 12TB or more, according to WD’s spec sheet. I would highly recommend this drive.

I’ve only the had the most recent drive running 261 hours now with no issues. I have two others with over 2,000 hours. It was exhaustively tested by my Synology NAS when installed and again when loading it half full right away. It just works.

Purchased several. Used in primarily in a listed server. So it should be supported. 50% (no exaggeration), had to be sent back for RMA. I have 1 that has come back twice. Not worth the effort. Stay away. You’ve been warned.
