This is Ultrastar which was Hitachi brand in Western Digital. No problem with disk drives.

I purchased two and one was DOA. B&H replaced it no issues, however it brings into question is WD is lowering their quality standards to bring the price down. The replacement works just great and both easily hit their rated speeds. Here’s to hoping they last like my previous WD drives.

This has to be the perfect choice for storing large volumes of files for backup, or backup images, collections of very large files. The 7200 RPM speed allows the drive to maintain a good performance. While no HDD is going to match an SSD, the speed and space of this beast is amazing. It easily fit into an external storage enclosure. I use a USB 3.1/3.2 connection to move the data. If you have large files, or backup images that need to be stored, this is a good choice.

fast, while not silent

I purchased 4 drives. Installed them in a brand new server. 2 of the 4 drives failed upon installation. Downloaded the WD drive tester which could not even locate the drives. DRIVEMGR.MSC could see the drive but could not format it. For Enterprise Class drives, very disappointing~

I hope this is not a sign of things to come. One of the four does not even show up in Mac OSX or Window 10. I have had excellent reliability with the HGST Ultrastars for 6 years now (4TB and 10TB) so hoping that this is a one time thing. The 5 years warranty is good but even better is my double redundancy.

So far it is working good, it is not completely quiet, but it is quieter than previous WD gold generation, it works cool and looks well made.

I put two of these 12TB drives in a Synology DS418 NAS enclosure and configured them in RAID1. It’s also populated with two 10TB Ultrastar drives. I couldn’t be happier with them!

I couldn’t get this drive to boot up in my recently purchased 2-DRIVE DOCK USB 3.1 G2/USB 3 10GB/S. I have another dock, and it doesn’t boot up in that one either. I have other drives, and they all work in both docks. I’ll be returning it.

The drive may be fine – if you have an enclosure that works with 4Kn-type drives. Even though this drive standard technically has been out for a few years, many leading enclosures do not work with 4Kn-type drives. For example OWC’s Mercury Elite Pro Dual won’t work with it. The OWC ThunderBay 4 will work – but are you planning to buy four drives plus spend another $350 or more for the enclosure? Here is OWC’s warning from 2018: https://eshop.macsales.com/Service/Knowledgebase/Article/12/668/OWC-Enclosures–Drive-Docks-4Kn-Drive-Compatibility In short, make sure that your use case is compatible with this 4Kn-type drive. Or else you will be stuck (like I am) with an expensive drive that you cannot use. Some may think I’m unfair with the 2-star rating, but I think a disclaimer on the product description would have been nice.

I have about 12 of these (12TB) drives deployed in both a RAID-10 box used for video editing and also in a Synology NAS. They work flawlessly. The challenge I always have in sourcing these is that you can rarely find them in retail packaging with the manufacturer’s 5-year warranty. They are typically sold by people who buy in bulk and sell them in smaller quantities with their own warranty. Fortunately, B&H has come to the rescue, offering them in retail packaging with full manufacturer’s warranty and pricing comparable to what you find for the bulk drives. (The B&H SKU is slightly different but same drives.) I recommend both these drives as well as purchasing them from B&H.

I’ve been upgrading the drives in my Drobo to these. They are fast and extremely reliable.

Got 6 of these drives to upgrade in my NAS replacing old 4TB drives. They came well packaged and I ran badblocks on all of them which took ~6 days to complete all 4 passes and comparisons. All of them passed with no errors and have been up and running for a 3-4 weeks 2/7 with no issue.

Great price and fast. Hope it can last.

This is my first time to buy online out of my country, frankly it was an awesome experience, get the product faster than my expectation, with professional package. Many Thanks

I have 4 of them in RAID 10………….. they rock !!

Use these in a Synology DS1817 NAS box They have been running 24/7 for over a year with no issues. Judging from other reviews these are some of the most reliable drives you can purchase and really well priced at B&H

I always used WDs never had any issues with them

Easily added it to my tower for an extra 6GB. Runs very quietly. This is the third WD Ultrastar I’ve purchased; the other two are 4GB each, and they’ve been running reliably in the same tower for over two years. Very fast data transfers!

I bought a pair of these and a pair of 8TB Red drives around the same time. These drives are faster than reds but quite noisy. The seek noise is pretty loud. The other side of the coin is that my throughput is 20 to 30% higher than with the red drives on the same workload. Other than the noise, I have no complaints about these drives.
