Very Good.

The MTBF is even longer on these models. Prefer the enterprise grade drives even for personal data. Performance is stellar.

Just got the drive. Unpacked it, installed it and it started making weird noises and failed on initializing. $150 paper weight.

I’ve been using UltraStar drives for over a decade, sourcing them from B&H the last several years. These drives have proven rock solid reliable. I’ve never had one fail until two days ago when one of eight 14TB drives arrived DOA out of the box. Of course, B&H is replacing it with no questions asked. That said, I was struck by the age of the drives I received this time. Normally when I receive UltraStar drives, they are pretty fresh with manufacturing dates only a few months earlier than their arrival at my door. Not these 14TB models. They’ve been sitting around since October of 2019. Is that why one arrived DOA? I can’t say. I just offer this up as a data point. The 14TB size is currently being offered at a significant discount.

I got this thing since my WD black and server grade drives have had a lot less issues over the years than anything else I have used, and in fact this drive is replacing a batch of air filled drives from 2009-2013 that haven’t died yet. Assuming you get the 12 TB Ultrastar (right now) you should be getting helium drives and they run considerably cooler than the air ones. Just wish that Ultrastars of different model were more widely available, if you buy from amazon for example most third parties will have to RMA thru them, only a few places like B&H have direct WD warranty. As such I had to get this 512e instead of 4Kn model, but I guess it would still be better for compatibility reasons if I ever decides to run say windows 7 and use that to read this thing…

Got mine a few weeks ago and no issues so far. These do the same clicking that the old HGST drives did but those are still fine as well. Very fast drive too!

Purchased quantity 4 and 3 arrived DOA. Returned all for replacement. Second batch of 4 had 2 DOA and one with less than stellar startup. Returned all again and decided to try a different brand/model. I don’t know if these were just a bad batch or bounced really hard during shipping. But B&H resolved the issues to my satisfaction. Can’t say ‘I loved it’ or ‘hate it’ – thus the 3 stars

Use the Ultrastar 12TB with the OWC Drive Dock USB Type-C Dual Drive Bay Solution as my computer’s backup. No complaints. So far, so good.

I have two of these drives in a Synology NAS. Very nice drives and so far very reliable. I liked the fact these have a 5 year warranty where the others only have 3. They are a little bit loud but to be expected with an Enterprise drive.

Exceptional quality.

I have purchased mostly WD drives in the past and I think that the performance for this hard disk drive is great, and reliability appears the same. I purchased this drive to replace a smaller one in my Synology NAS, and the SMART tests show a clean bill of health. Some of the reasons I purchased this drive was that I felt the price/TB value proposition for an enterprise class drive is really great. Also, the 2.5M hours MTBF and a 5 year limited warranty was really appealing to me as well. Like I said, this replaced a disk in my NAS, so as far as noise I have not really noticed a difference from before I replaced it. Out of the drives in my NAS, it is the one running the coolest at 32c at idle. I have only had this drive for a little over a month, but I love WD drives and I would not hesitate to purchase one again.

I ordered a couple more of these when they were on sale. So far so good, no issues. Customer service was excellent as well price matching the one I did buy right before the sale.

Okay, maybe it’s pushing it to call them a bargain, but I bought two of these big boys to place in my CyperPowerPC gamer desktop computer to handle the large RAW photography files that I’m often processing in Lightroom. I use the one WD 10TB Ultrastar SATA Series drive for my photo work in process, then use the second drive as a backup. I own a few Western Digital external backup drives and lots of SanDisk (owned by WD) memory cards, so I respect WD.

Confirming everything reviewer Larry said. Drives are new, in sealed retail packaging. Sealed bag, drive label, and SMART all show model number HGST HUS726T4TALA6L4. Units I received have manufacturing date of March 04 2019. Manufacturer’s warranty is valid. Both powered up and formatted fine, and went right to work. These new, sealed, valid-warranty drives from B&H were priced better than the same model from gray-market Amazon marketplace sellers. I’ve seen complaints on various forums and discussion groups about some Ultrastar drives having power connector compatibility problems (drive stays in standby when connected to older systems) or not having the middle pair of mounting screw holes. These drives do not have either problem; they’re legacy-compatible with standard SATA power connectors, and they have all the usual mounting screw holes. Regarding reviewer Edward’s concern that his drive is noisy, it’s normal for a datacenter drive to make noise as it operates. If you want a quiet drive for a desktop workstation, buy a WD Black, not a datacenter device.

I ordered 2, and 1 arrived DOA. But, B&H had great customer service and the return/exchange only took a little over a week. Both drives currently in a NAS and work well. Low noise. Will be looking to expand with 2 more drives soon.

I buy only WD hard drives and not even one failed. This one is very fast and quiet comparing to the WD RE I still have running…

B&H Photo was great! Shipped quickly in retail package. Registered product with HGST (WD) for 5 years. Product would energize (spin up) but not be seen by 2 different eSATA ports (currently working with 1TB & 4TB WD harddrives) and external docking station (working fine with 1TB WD drive). Drive not found so unable to report on satisfaction. RMA’d drive with factory and has not been returned yet. Unfortunately, I will likely get refurbished drive (per their warranty policy) after purchasing new item.

This is packaged for retail sale. However, inside is a standard latest-release DC HC510 drive, with He10 Helium technology. Comes with full five year factory warranty (easily checked by testing the S/N at hgst.com/portal/site/en/support/warranty/ ) These are the highest-performance, lowest power, most reliable HDD’s out there.

I bought this to replace a 7-year old Seagate (7200 rpm 1TB) that crashed on me last week. I’ve no complaints about the lifespan of that drive, but saw better reviews for WD (that, and I had a second same-age Seagate drive die within two days). Swapping this drive out for the old one was a breeze, and no complaints thus far. The drive isn’t noisy, and I’ll see how this one holds up.

This drive is very noisy and runs hot, I am going to have to put a fan on it. I didn’t get near 8 TB, but I guess that is the way they rate hard drives today.
