works great.

I’ve been using WD drives for years, including Golds, REs, Velociraptors, and Blacks, depending on the application. I’ve read these, which are formerly HGST drives, were rated higher than Golds for data center applications. Since I never had any issue with REs or Golds, that seemed like a dare. At the time I bought them, they even cost less than similar Golds (which was a bonus, not a deciding factor). These two are operating in a Synology 718+, configured in RAID1. They fired right up, formatted without a complaint, and have handled data without any issue. Since that is what a hard drive is supposed to do, call it a victory so far. The complaints I’ve seen on these drives concern noise, specifically head chatter, not reliability. I’ve seen an explanation about why that happens from WD. Mine, though, are pretty much silent, at least as quiet as the Golds in the NAS next to them. As a bonus, as the description says they are in retail packaging with the full retail warranty. I don’t have a problem with OEM drives, but getting the retail version at the price I paid was a nice surprise. So far, so good and I have no reason to expect that to change.

The WD Ultrastar Data Center rated drives are heavy. You can feel the quality. If you’re debating between a Data Center drive and a less expensive one, consider how important your data is, and the cost of failure. These drives are built to last.

I use to edit a lot of 4K and 6k footage and the disk has worked great for me.

I needed this internal drive for in-computer storage capacity. It works as expected, and was easy to install.

Since I purchased a very high resulution digital camera I have been consiming hard disk space at an alarming rate. My Western Digital 12Tb UltraStar to the rescue. I used my StarTech docking station to handle all the disk activation and copying. Once I copied all files from my old 4Tb photo drive to the new 12Tb drive using Windows Explorer I just swapped drives and their power and signal plugs and my updated system was ready to go. Very simple, very quick, very nice.

They are discontinued by Western Digital. DOA.

Fast and robust, check in 5 years to see if it lasted, hoping it does.

Perfect!

I’ve had it for a week. I can’t seriously evaluate it. It must take some time to know about your performance, etc. I have other WD records and they have worked very well for me, that’s why the 5 stars.

I used to manage a lot of footage and works great.

Bought this with recommendation of Marco at B&H. Works great with my synology NAS
Alfred Hyatt (verified owner) –
I bought 3 same 6 TB disks for NAS. their performance are higher than my NAS synology but I choose them due to 5 years warranty and good reliability. Unfortunately these disks pretty hot and sometimes noisy. but for me it is not a problem due to NAS is located in a separate room – I just set up coolers for max rpm.

Not a great confidence boost.

Got two of these for my new Synology DS218+. Work flawlessly.

I purchased two of these from B&H to replace my 6-year-old Seagate Hybrid HDD’s. Well priced at $175 apiece and they appear to be working just fine. Ask me in 6 months and again in 1 year. The drives, however, a 5-year limited warranty so if something goes wrong I can RMA them with WD!

I installed one as my primary desktop drive and purchased a second to use to clone the primary for a backup. Relying on the 2 million hour MTBF.

5 star for the drive performance: installed the drive, and the data transfer is fast as expected. 3 star for the drive noise: the drive is a bit loud when during read/write I give 1 star because over all experience with Western Digital: I wasn’t able to register the product with WD’s online Product Warranty Registration site (at https://support.wdc.com/support/productregistration.aspx). The site does not recognize the serial number. Call the WD support, waited for 30+ minutes, and finally got to a support representative, opened a case, and was asked to send in my proof of purchase and a picture of the drive’s serial number (which by now had already been installed). I was told that the serial number on the box that came with the drive is will not be accepted. So I now have to crack open computer case and remove the drive the take a picture. I SHOULD HAVE READ OTHER COMMENTS GIVEN BY OTHER REVIEWERS.

There are retail packaging but inside is the latest helium Ultrastar drive, with S/N that verifies on the HGST enterprise warranty site for full five year warranty. It doesn’t get better than this. Current pricing under $30/TB for 12TB.

I have a few of these and so far no issues. We will see within 5 years if they keep going strong.
