I have about 12 of these (12TB) drives deployed in both a RAID-10 box used for video editing and also in a Synology NAS. They work flawlessly. The challenge I always have in sourcing these is that you can rarely find them in retail packaging with the manufacturer’s 5-year warranty. They are typically sold by people who buy in bulk and sell them in smaller quantities with their own warranty. Fortunately, B&H has come to the rescue, offering them in retail packaging with full manufacturer’s warranty and pricing comparable to what you find for the bulk drives. (The B&H SKU is slightly different but same drives.) I recommend both these drives as well as purchasing them from B&H.

I bought 3 same 6 TB disks for NAS. their performance are higher than my NAS synology but I choose them due to 5 years warranty and good reliability. Unfortunately these disks pretty hot and sometimes noisy. but for me it is not a problem due to NAS is located in a separate room – I just set up coolers for max rpm.

Easily added it to my tower for an extra 6GB. Runs very quietly. This is the third WD Ultrastar I’ve purchased; the other two are 4GB each, and they’ve been running reliably in the same tower for over two years. Very fast data transfers!

They are discontinued by Western Digital. DOA.

I purchased two of these from B&H to replace my 6-year-old Seagate Hybrid HDD’s. Well priced at $175 apiece and they appear to be working just fine. Ask me in 6 months and again in 1 year. The drives, however, a 5-year limited warranty so if something goes wrong I can RMA them with WD!

B&H Photo was great! Shipped quickly in retail package. Registered product with HGST (WD) for 5 years. Product would energize (spin up) but not be seen by 2 different eSATA ports (currently working with 1TB & 4TB WD harddrives) and external docking station (working fine with 1TB WD drive). Drive not found so unable to report on satisfaction. RMA’d drive with factory and has not been returned yet. Unfortunately, I will likely get refurbished drive (per their warranty policy) after purchasing new item.

The drive may be fine – if you have an enclosure that works with 4Kn-type drives. Even though this drive standard technically has been out for a few years, many leading enclosures do not work with 4Kn-type drives. For example OWC’s Mercury Elite Pro Dual won’t work with it. The OWC ThunderBay 4 will work – but are you planning to buy four drives plus spend another $350 or more for the enclosure? Here is OWC’s warning from 2018: https://eshop.macsales.com/Service/Knowledgebase/Article/12/668/OWC-Enclosures–Drive-Docks-4Kn-Drive-Compatibility In short, make sure that your use case is compatible with this 4Kn-type drive. Or else you will be stuck (like I am) with an expensive drive that you cannot use. Some may think I’m unfair with the 2-star rating, but I think a disclaimer on the product description would have been nice.

Real Deal Ultrastars!! When paired with 2020 Mercury Elite Pro, using CrystalDiskMark, benched at 275/274 Read/Write speeds.

Retail version, in a box as shown – 5 year warranty registration is valid at WD’s site – no OEM no-warranty shenanigans at B&H. These are no louder than any other spindle drive, and perform well in a Dell T130. That’s a tower server with a big echo-y box right under my desk – so.. these are pretty quiet. 8TB of storage for 5 years for this price? Good deal. A single 4TB SSD at the time of this writing is double the cost of this 2 pack. If you have the trays available, and need the space for VMs or media, this pack should be on your list. Recommended.

Okay, maybe it’s pushing it to call them a bargain, but I bought two of these big boys to place in my CyperPowerPC gamer desktop computer to handle the large RAW photography files that I’m often processing in Lightroom. I use the one WD 10TB Ultrastar SATA Series drive for my photo work in process, then use the second drive as a backup. I own a few Western Digital external backup drives and lots of SanDisk (owned by WD) memory cards, so I respect WD.

Got 6 of these drives to upgrade in my NAS replacing old 4TB drives. They came well packaged and I ran badblocks on all of them which took ~6 days to complete all 4 passes and comparisons. All of them passed with no errors and have been up and running for a 3-4 weeks 2/7 with no issue.

I’ve generally bought 4TB WD Black drives, because I think that they are well made and should last. I had a problem with one last year (a couple of sectors that became unreadable), so I decided to got with the 6TB Ultrastar, instead of getting the 6TB Black, to see whether its durability would be better. It’s early days yet – I won’t know the answer to that question for a few years (actually, I hope more than a few), but so far the drive has been impressively undramatic: fast, quiet, no problems running a dd of the whole disk, no problems rsyncing 4TB of data onto it. I hope the non-drama continues unabated for many yearts. If that happens, I’ll bump the rating to a 5.

I’ve been running this thing almost constantly for the last several months. It’s a fast hdd and it fit into my quick swap bay. It can be a bit loud compared to consumer drives, but it’s not very disruptive or obnoxious

I only buy to types 3.5 drives WD and Seagate in 3.5 size they just work

Plug and play. I used these drives for archiving. So far so good.

1st one I ordered would not initialize right out of the box. Second one is noisy and makes me nervous.
