The MTBF is even longer on these models. Prefer the enterprise grade drives even for personal data. Performance is stellar.

I’ve owned over 50 hard drives. Been using five of the WD Ultrastar 14TB versions for my photo database for over 2 years now, no problems. Do I trust them? Well, I just bought six more 14TB drives.

After 3.5 years, both HDDs (HGST Deskstars, 3 year warranty) in my Synology 216+ NAS started to get bad sectors. I could not find information on what an acceptable limit for the number of bad sectors would be, so when one HDD showed 700 and the other 200 bad sectors over a span of 3 months, I decided to upgrade to the WD 10TB Ultrastars. The Synology OS makes upgrading easy: replace one drive at a time and choose ‘repair’ which in my case rebuilds the RAID 1 of my system. The process took about 8 hours per drive. Afterwards, I elected to create a new disk volume since the new drives have more capacity than the drives they replaced. So far everything works as advertised. The real test is how long these new HDDs will last…

I have always chosen former HGST’s Ultrastar for its reliability. As I did a lot of research, I found that the WD Gold Ultrastar HDD, enterprise class, was what I should buy now, rather than WD’s red versions. The 6TB version of Gold Ultrastar is quieter and less power-consuming than 8TB or 10TB version. It’s also a lot quieter than my old 4TB Ultrastar that I purchased about 5 years ago. The power consumption is 7.0W when in operation and only 5.9W when idle. If you need a drive with a higher capacity and a lower power-consumption than this 6TB version, you need to get one with 12TB or more, according to WD’s spec sheet. I would highly recommend this drive.

I installed one as my primary desktop drive and purchased a second to use to clone the primary for a backup. Relying on the 2 million hour MTBF.

This drive is very fast! Crystal Disc Mark ratings 64 gb test: Write Speed – 258 MBS, Read – 267 MBS over USB 3! I gave this drive 4 stars as I can’t speak to the longevity of it yet since I just started to use it. I am presently using it as a backup drive in an external enclosure.

I purchased two of these for a RAID 0 replacing my 6.5 year old Ultrastars. I’ll go to SSD next time. What I learned: 1. If you google the MFR #WDBBUR0040BNC-WRSN number as listed by BHPhoto you’ll get results only associated to BHPhoto. So I was worried that they might be old or something else. Upon receipt the drive is clearly marked HUS726T4TALA6L4 which is the latest HC310 Western Digital 4TB Ultrastar Drive. The foil bag and the drives both are marked this way. 2. The serial number can be entered on the Western Digital site and indicates the limited 5 year warranty as stated on the BHPhoto site also. 3. The drive I received was manufactured March 2019 (today’s date is 7/1/2019). 4. This is an excellent price for this drive as my experience is that they do last. This is the drive that you can turn on for 5+ years and forget it (with a backup of course). 5. It has a 256MB buffer and other extras not in the more expensive WD Black. 6. I’m on a MAC using a OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual and everything was smooth and easy to setup using Disk Utility. 7. Sofar the drives are running great.

I wanted to combine a mishmash of HDDs in my PC that have accumulated over the years into a single, large capacity HDD to store files I don’t need on my system disk. This 4TB data center rated Ultrastar is perfect for that! Transfer speeds are good in my system with this disk outperforming both the 2 TB Hitachi and the 300GB WD VelociRapter it replaced.

Revising my earlier review. The drive does indeed spin down depending on enclosure. But from what I’ve been reading better to leave it spinning all the time. Using it and it seems fine. Yes it clicks and clacks and is kinda loud but it’s a 7200 rpm and I think that’s normal.

I bought this HDD for speed, size, and warranty, having a good price (at the time I bought it). According to Xbench measurements, read and write speeds on the outer partition are 228 GB/s and 235 GB/s, respectively, which are the best of any HDD I have owned. I use that partition as boot partition for an 2015 iMac and am pleased with the drive overall performance.

I’ve been using WD drives for years, including Golds, REs, Velociraptors, and Blacks, depending on the application. I’ve read these, which are formerly HGST drives, were rated higher than Golds for data center applications. Since I never had any issue with REs or Golds, that seemed like a dare. At the time I bought them, they even cost less than similar Golds (which was a bonus, not a deciding factor). These two are operating in a Synology 718+, configured in RAID1. They fired right up, formatted without a complaint, and have handled data without any issue. Since that is what a hard drive is supposed to do, call it a victory so far. The complaints I’ve seen on these drives concern noise, specifically head chatter, not reliability. I’ve seen an explanation about why that happens from WD. Mine, though, are pretty much silent, at least as quiet as the Golds in the NAS next to them. As a bonus, as the description says they are in retail packaging with the full retail warranty. I don’t have a problem with OEM drives, but getting the retail version at the price I paid was a nice surprise. So far, so good and I have no reason to expect that to change.

We have been running four of these in a Drobo 5D for over a year now. No problems. Don’t understand complaints about noise, since these are usually used in a unit that can be hidden under the desk or away from your ears. Usually the noise comes from cooling fan or other sheet metal of the drive container (Drobo in my case), not the drive itself.

I’ve had it for a week. I can’t seriously evaluate it. It must take some time to know about your performance, etc. I have other WD records and they have worked very well for me, that’s why the 5 stars.
