The drive may be fine – if you have an enclosure that works with 4Kn-type drives. Even though this drive standard technically has been out for a few years, many leading enclosures do not work with 4Kn-type drives. For example OWC’s Mercury Elite Pro Dual won’t work with it. The OWC ThunderBay 4 will work – but are you planning to buy four drives plus spend another $350 or more for the enclosure? Here is OWC’s warning from 2018: https://eshop.macsales.com/Service/Knowledgebase/Article/12/668/OWC-Enclosures–Drive-Docks-4Kn-Drive-Compatibility In short, make sure that your use case is compatible with this 4Kn-type drive. Or else you will be stuck (like I am) with an expensive drive that you cannot use. Some may think I’m unfair with the 2-star rating, but I think a disclaimer on the product description would have been nice.

I have two of these drives in a Synology NAS. Very nice drives and so far very reliable. I liked the fact these have a 5 year warranty where the others only have 3. They are a little bit loud but to be expected with an Enterprise drive.

Bought this with recommendation of Marco at B&H. Works great with my synology NAS

Okay, maybe it’s pushing it to call them a bargain, but I bought two of these big boys to place in my CyperPowerPC gamer desktop computer to handle the large RAW photography files that I’m often processing in Lightroom. I use the one WD 10TB Ultrastar SATA Series drive for my photo work in process, then use the second drive as a backup. I own a few Western Digital external backup drives and lots of SanDisk (owned by WD) memory cards, so I respect WD.

Purchased quantity 4 and 3 arrived DOA. Returned all for replacement. Second batch of 4 had 2 DOA and one with less than stellar startup. Returned all again and decided to try a different brand/model. I don’t know if these were just a bad batch or bounced really hard during shipping. But B&H resolved the issues to my satisfaction. Can’t say ‘I loved it’ or ‘hate it’ – thus the 3 stars

Big, fast, quiet, and dependable so far. That’s why I have stayed with WD drives for over 20 years now. Initialized it in Win10, did a quick format and was ready to go.

Good value for price. Use it for large back up’s in NAS system.

The MTBF is even longer on these models. Prefer the enterprise grade drives even for personal data. Performance is stellar.

Drives are well packed in these retail boxes, this gives me confidence to have them posted and arrive in good condition. Super fast postage too, so I’m very happy.

Real Deal Ultrastars!! When paired with 2020 Mercury Elite Pro, using CrystalDiskMark, benched at 275/274 Read/Write speeds.

I would not buy any other model or brand of drive. The Western Digital gold series has been proven to last longer than many other drives. I recommend using this drive in a RAID 5 or 6 configuration as you will have the benefit of redundancy just in case any drive should fail.

Purchased several. Used in primarily in a listed server. So it should be supported. 50% (no exaggeration), had to be sent back for RMA. I have 1 that has come back twice. Not worth the effort. Stay away. You’ve been warned.

Use the Ultrastar 12TB with the OWC Drive Dock USB Type-C Dual Drive Bay Solution as my computer’s backup. No complaints. So far, so good.

They have worked flawlessly so far and there is nothing more than you can ask for a HDD…

Almost half of the WD 14TB drives we have purchased in the last 6 weeks have been defective. The drives will not mount and there is a nasty mechanical sound from inside the drive.

This drive is very fast! Crystal Disc Mark ratings 64 gb test: Write Speed – 258 MBS, Read – 267 MBS over USB 3! I gave this drive 4 stars as I can’t speak to the longevity of it yet since I just started to use it. I am presently using it as a backup drive in an external enclosure.

I’ve been using UltraStar drives for over a decade, sourcing them from B&H the last several years. These drives have proven rock solid reliable. I’ve never had one fail until two days ago when one of eight 14TB drives arrived DOA out of the box. Of course, B&H is replacing it with no questions asked. That said, I was struck by the age of the drives I received this time. Normally when I receive UltraStar drives, they are pretty fresh with manufacturing dates only a few months earlier than their arrival at my door. Not these 14TB models. They’ve been sitting around since October of 2019. Is that why one arrived DOA? I can’t say. I just offer this up as a data point. The 14TB size is currently being offered at a significant discount.

I’ve generally bought 4TB WD Black drives, because I think that they are well made and should last. I had a problem with one last year (a couple of sectors that became unreadable), so I decided to got with the 6TB Ultrastar, instead of getting the 6TB Black, to see whether its durability would be better. It’s early days yet – I won’t know the answer to that question for a few years (actually, I hope more than a few), but so far the drive has been impressively undramatic: fast, quiet, no problems running a dd of the whole disk, no problems rsyncing 4TB of data onto it. I hope the non-drama continues unabated for many yearts. If that happens, I’ll bump the rating to a 5.

This is the fourth 8TB HGST heritage Ultrastar drive in my inventory. The first two were Hitachi branded, the last two were Western Digital branded though the third one had a WD label, but the firmware reports an Hitachi heritage model number. I’ve been happy with the performance of the drives and I’ve had no failures. I use two of these disks to archive video and audio projects with identical copies on two backup disks stored in a different location in containers. Since I edit on solid state disks, I have a drive power switch that allows me to keep these disks powered off until I need to backup the project. WD has changed the bottom mounting screw pattern to the traditional 3.5 hard drive pattern. HGST Ultrastars had an unusual pattern that probably worked for large OEMs selling into the data center market, but was a poor fit for my particular case mounting methodology. Now, I keep the WD Ultrastars in the machine and use the older HGST drives for offline backup.
