I got this thing since my WD black and server grade drives have had a lot less issues over the years than anything else I have used, and in fact this drive is replacing a batch of air filled drives from 2009-2013 that haven’t died yet. Assuming you get the 12 TB Ultrastar (right now) you should be getting helium drives and they run considerably cooler than the air ones. Just wish that Ultrastars of different model were more widely available, if you buy from amazon for example most third parties will have to RMA thru them, only a few places like B&H have direct WD warranty. As such I had to get this 512e instead of 4Kn model, but I guess it would still be better for compatibility reasons if I ever decides to run say windows 7 and use that to read this thing…

I installed one as my primary desktop drive and purchased a second to use to clone the primary for a backup. Relying on the 2 million hour MTBF.

Drive is quiet and efficient.

Choose WD Ultrastar 10TB for my new Ryzen 3900X CPU and X570 Aorus Master MB custom build after excellent experience w WD Black 5TB and 6TB drives on a previous custom build. After nearly 5 years of heavy use photo editing (Adobe LR and PS, some video editing), SMART tests on these Black drives are excellent. The load cycle rating of these enterprise Ultrastar is multiples of these ratings for the Black drives. Furthermore, they are recommended by some very prestigious custom PC builders!

Got 6 of these drives to upgrade in my NAS replacing old 4TB drives. They came well packaged and I ran badblocks on all of them which took ~6 days to complete all 4 passes and comparisons. All of them passed with no errors and have been up and running for a 3-4 weeks 2/7 with no issue.

Revising my earlier review. The drive does indeed spin down depending on enclosure. But from what I’ve been reading better to leave it spinning all the time. Using it and it seems fine. Yes it clicks and clacks and is kinda loud but it’s a 7200 rpm and I think that’s normal.

Replaced an aged (still functional) standard hard drive with no hitch, snarl, or surprise. Works smoothly.

Everyone I know used to swear by WD, and I have been in tech companies since 1992. I bought this kit for a great price and tossed them into a cheap asmedia based dual drive dock. Even cloning I did not see temps above 30 degrees C. They were quiet. The reputation for reliability is solid. I did hear some clicking in the random write tests of CristalDiscmark, but other that that they were dead quiet!

WD very good

This has to be the perfect choice for storing large volumes of files for backup, or backup images, collections of very large files. The 7200 RPM speed allows the drive to maintain a good performance. While no HDD is going to match an SSD, the speed and space of this beast is amazing. It easily fit into an external storage enclosure. I use a USB 3.1/3.2 connection to move the data. If you have large files, or backup images that need to be stored, this is a good choice.

I ordered a two pack of these drives in May for expansion of our Synology NAS. We’ve been away from of our of office because of Covid, so I didn’t install the drives until July. One drive worked fine, the other didn’t. SMART info could not be read. Synology’s drive health test reported an Access Error. I went with an Ultrastar Enterprise-Class drive for reliability. They claim a 2M hour MTBF rate. I guess that counts only if it works out of the box. B&H wouldn’t help because the return window had passed so I have to get an RMA from Western Digital, and pay to send it to them. Then, in a couple weeks I might get a used, repaired drive back. This was the hassle I was hoping to avoid.

I used to manage a lot of footage and works great.

I hope this is not a sign of things to come. One of the four does not even show up in Mac OSX or Window 10. I have had excellent reliability with the HGST Ultrastars for 6 years now (4TB and 10TB) so hoping that this is a one time thing. The 5 years warranty is good but even better is my double redundancy.

I bought these drives to replace WD Red Pro 3TB tjst are starting to age out in my two synced NAS boxes ( Synology DS415+ that I love). Have only had to install two in the last weeks and they came up right away after full surface checks. They run quietly, but that’s an individual perception.

B&H delivered as promised. Two 12 TB Ultrastar drives in their original sealed WD retail packaging. Both drives installed in my NAS with zero issues and are performing as expected.

This is my first time to buy online out of my country, frankly it was an awesome experience, get the product faster than my expectation, with professional package. Many Thanks

B&H Photo was great! Shipped quickly in retail package. Registered product with HGST (WD) for 5 years. Product would energize (spin up) but not be seen by 2 different eSATA ports (currently working with 1TB & 4TB WD harddrives) and external docking station (working fine with 1TB WD drive). Drive not found so unable to report on satisfaction. RMA’d drive with factory and has not been returned yet. Unfortunately, I will likely get refurbished drive (per their warranty policy) after purchasing new item.
