This drive is equipped with 1TB of storage and a USB 3.0 Type-C interface. If your computer doesn’t have a USB Type-C port, an included USB Type-C to Type-A adapter helps ensure compatibility with older systems. This drive is also bus-powered, meaning that all its power is provided by the USB cable and no external power cables or adapters are required.
Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

My main purpose for this drive is backing up content to store it somewhere safe in case disaster strikes. For this the drive is ideal. The size is quite small (if I would have ever smoked I would possibly say the size of a cigarette box) and it offers 4T (well 3.6GB if you ask Windows) of storage space. When doing my backup I have seen a sustained write speed of 100MB/s which is for such a drive really nice. After copying 2T, the drive case got less warm then my notebook (according to my disc monitor it was reaching 41C – which is a tad warmer then my normal disc drive @38C). I of course not say anything about the long term durability yet, but I hope that by the time I know more about it you won’t be interested in it anymore. 😉

My application is extremely simplistic. As an artist my wife takes thousands of photo’s and needs a safe place to store them in an orderly way. We’ve been using WD My Passports for years and needed to upgrade from a 250MB unit. This 1TB unit should be a great photo repository for several years to come. We use USB 2.0 but expect to upgrade at some point to USB 3.0

The USB mount does not work and w=I went trhough 4 cables. WD would not take back the drive. They initially said it was a bad cable. I told them thos was the second drive of the same class that this has happened too. They said it could not be the drive. They are wrong and I would not suppost this brand anymore. I am on to thinderbolt / lacie no more USB. And no WD after the bad support.

Nice design and been working for the past few months. The supplied cable was very difficult to push in the drive at first, was being careful and didn’t want to break anything, it does go all the way in with a bit of a gentle jiggle.
