Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I’m using the drive to hold the primary copy of my music. My primary music hard drive failed, so I copied my music from my backup drive to this drive. Performance was good during the copy. Hopefully the drive will last a long time.

This works fine with my Mac. This particular one I’m using to back up financial records. I have another this size for photos & videos and a larger one I use for Time Machine backups. They do fail over time and so I’ve learned that buyer the cheaper ones with less storage makes sense since they’ll likely have to be replaced and I’ve usually not filled them by then. Keep multiple backups!

I use hard drives like this for taking audio and video files on the road, and for sending clients large video files. Before doing anything else with the hard drive, I use Apple’s disk utility to partition it into two partitions, and prepare it for use with our Mac computers at the studio. The proprietary software that comes installed on the drive is a nuisance for me, and prevents me and my clients from using it transparently. I’m not worried in my professional life about somebody accessing this drive’s contents and stealing or corrupting them. I’m thinking more of ease-of-use for my studio staff and for my clients, and the Apple disk utility lets me set the drive up quickly and efficiently.

This is third My Pssport Ultra portable HD purchased over the last 3 years. I use them to back up internal hard drives on both MacBook pro and PC computers. Reliable, quiet, speed as advertised, and easy to plug and play with integrated software to set up for automatic backup or other operations. I do not have experience with other brands or models from which to compare, but so far, I have had no need to consider any others! If you compare price to quality and reliability, this has been consistently the best value.

Extremely portable hard drive, 1 TB, USB 3, reasonable price…and it’s red. I purchased this as my field drive for dumping cards on photo shoots, and so far, it’s done its job. I recommend reformatting it to either NTFS, or OSX Journaled of some sort; FAT32 has a 4GB file size cap that can be a huge pain if you’re working with high resolution video. It hasn’t died on me; if it does, I’ll come and change this rating/review. Not much else to say.

This product is used primarily for backing up my computer. The software provide with the unit makes this easy and complete. Plus there are additional applications provided that I found quite useful. I discarded my previous back-up software in lieu of the one provided with this device. The unit is compact and sleek.

I always carry two WD portable drives when traveling So far no problems. I always back-up digital files on, at least, two external drives. These drives are not armored so have to care not to drop or treat roughly. It would surely help if WD would print the size (capacity) of their portable drives on the device.

It’s a no frills external hard drive. I was happy to find that it comes with a USB 3.0 cable (albeit a very short one) to facilitate fast transfers. It looks good, has a sleek form, is small enough to pocket, and runs near silent.My only complaint is the software that comes with it is limited and has a terrible, dated interface, and runs constantly in the background even if you don’t have backup enabled. It does, however, offer a handy feature where you can select a group of files to back up and it will continuously monitor them for changes and maintain a current backup in real time.Over all, 1TB with a small form factor for $ seems like a pretty good deal to me.
