Since WD designed this My Passport Ultra drive for Windows, it comes preformatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. If you happen to work across both Windows and Mac platforms, WD provides a downloadable NTFS driver for macOS, which enables the reading and writing of this My Passport Ultra drive without any reformatting. Or, make it fully Mac compatible with a simple reformat. Thanks to a 256-bit AES hardware encryption chip, your private files are kept more secure.

I have a bunch of these drives by now, and keep buying more… I use them to store video and photo files while in the field, and then finally as an archive for a completed project. Never had a problem, they work hard and have a long life.

Right out of the box, the drive would not connect to my Mac. The problem: the included USB-C cable would not fit tightly in the drive’s USB-C socket. Fortunately I had a cable that did fit tightly. Problem solved. HOWEVER the drive constantly disappears from finder after a varying period of time, making the files on it inaccessible. Data has not been lost, but I constantly had to unplug and replug the drive to access my data. (About half the time, safely ejecting the drive didn’t work.) After spending two long chats with WD tech support, and several hours trying to run their Disk Utility (which was unsuccessful since the disk would disappear in the middle), WD informed me that although the disk was only two weeks old, they could not replace it with a new one. This is the third or fourth WD branded disk that I have had, and every one of them has had some problem or another.

The drive actually has more than 4TB of space (4,000,750,497,792 bytes when you right click Properties). Of course, Windows calls this 3.63 TB (calculated as 3.63 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024). The drive works approximately the same speed as my other USB 3.0 devices, which is the 50-100 MBs/sec range when copying from my fast camera SD card to the 4 TB drive. I’ve already copied about 1 and 1/3 TB of data to it without problems. It’s exactly what I expected based on the ad.

In addition to this particular 1.5TB WD drive that I bought recently, I have several WD external hard drives which I have used for backup and store photos during my nature photography trips to various locations. These drives have been 100% reliable for me for years. No failures, no issues. A 2TB Seagate backup plus that I bought recently is lighter and more compact though (I can’t comment on its relative reliability to the WD drive due to short time of use).

I have bought a few of these drives over the years and will continue to do so. Great portable hard drives at a great cost with quick data transfer speeds. Although they are not meant for editing, I have actually used them in the past when a client has sprung some request on me. Best used for storage only though.

I purchased this version of WD’s Passport because it came with a USB-C plug with I needed for it to connect with my new iMac without an adapter. Initially there some problems with the formatting but this is now resolved and it works fine.

Easy to use, plug and play on my Win7 machine, and no software required to use the basic functions. Right out of the box I have put over 1.1TB of backup data on it.The price per TB is good for this 1.5TB My Passport. I especially like the small size and the build quality. The shell is made of plastic, but the touch and feel both make me like this little portable drive (which holds big data!)I have an old WD My Passport (320GB) portable drive for 6 years, still running no problem. That gives me some confidence on buying this new one.

It appears to work as expected. However, it continually hums as though it is constantly searching and will not shut down or eject. I contacted WD and they suggested that there may be a conflict with my antivirus. Well, I have had many external Hard Drives and have never had a conflict with my antivirus in the past. So, what does that tell me?Not very happy with WD right now.
